Re: When did you learn about.......the birds & the bees

[ Edited ]

My parents never told me.  My older brother did say that if both parents ate eggs, they would have a baby. ( I was prob in 2nd grade). My dad ate eggs every morning. When I was in 6th grade I  read Judy Blume - "Wifey". Hello!

The Encyclopedia Britannica!  My best friend Judy and I would look up answers to our questions, read them and then have fun giggling and discussing what we read...

My Aunt had a talk with me. The thing I remember most is she not to sit on boys laps. This was the 50tys.

Re: When did you learn about.......the birds & the bees

My mother did continue on to answer my questions after I first found out. She explained it in a way that made it sound better than what the kids at school said!  She said that a Daddy plants little seeds inside of Mommy and one of those seeds grows into a baby.  She also said, for Mommy and Daddy it was a beautiful thing to happen and having a baby made them very happy.  I think she thought that was enough for a 5th or 6th grader.  Knowing my mother, there were other discussions but that's the only one I remember.

Re: When did you learn about.......the birds & the bees

When we asked where we came from, my parents told us we were floating down the stream on a lily pad and my Dad fished us out. When I was in middle school someone gave me the news and I told them they didn't know what they were talking about. I did find out about the act when I was 11 and in health class. I was not happy and never asked my Mom again about female issues because I knew she would not be honest with me. It was the 50's and no internet.

Re: When did you learn about.......the birds & the bees

My mother told my sister and I absolutely nothing about anything.  She expected us to learn it in school.  I learned about periods in school.  I learned about the birds and the bees in the hallways at school.

My niece is 13 and my sister hasn't told her anything.  History repeating itself.  My sister was waiting for her to get her period.  By the time she found out she had it, it was old news. She splits custody of the kids.  My nephew spilled the beans.

I found out about it through school and friends. My mother was so shy and meek that she never told me anything. That was something (among others) that she could never talk about. I had to find our about it on my own. I was so clueless I thought once you got married God did something to your insides and bam, you could now have a baby. Stupid I know.

@Meowingkitty well when you are little and don't know the facts that is not a bad guess--God does give us a miracle! I was 8 when my mom clued me in. She was matter of fact and gave a good explanation. No drama. I said OK, that's kinda weird, and went back to doing kid stuff.

Re: When did you learn about.......the birds & the bees

I don't ever remember not knowing. We grew up living in military housing and my mom and dad as well told me and my 4 older brothers about our bodies, how they worked and most importantly to never be ashamed to talk to them or ask them questions. importantly they told us about predators.

My darling brothers, bless them, also had the talk with my boyfriends.

I'm doing the same with my children.

We had sex education in school. All very tasteful and age appropriate starting in about fifth grade. I can't believe everyone didn't have that!
