Re: When You Answer The Phone And No One Is There...

Don't you find it interesting that not one politician has even mentioned this huge annoyance?  It's dangerous for many, having to get up and run to the phone. Not all seniors or youngsters are able to see the caller ID displays.

p.s.  This is a daily nuisance/annoyance.  And, also, why do we have to pay the entire phone bill, if we cannot answer our phones?  It's not right.  We are paying the phone company for only being able to make phone calls, and not being able to answer incoming calls.  For whatever reason, this doesn't seem right/fair.  We are paying them full price for only half the service.  I have a feeling they could stop those calls, in this technical/electronic day and age.  Makes one wonder.........

I have a stubborn streak when telephone scammers keep on with the incessant calls.  I don't care how many times they call, I never, ever answer them.  All go to voicemail.

The annoying debt collector calls started last November. Since I have been debt free for many years these were especially irritating. And I got the threatening IRS scam call too.

These people don't understand my mindset: the only way they might get a response is to show up at my door with a SWAT team and handcuffs.

LOL! I like your style! I got that same phoney IRS call yesterday and I never answer the phone anymore but boy I wish I had a big whistle in my hand to blow those crooks ear out.

I didn't know the FCC ruled last summer that phone

companies can legally provide robocall blocking services.  As we well know, that hasn't happened, nor does it seem likely.

Here is an article about it:

ETA: Last no on article reference is n378051.  Don't know why it didn't show.

They say never to push a menu button on those solicitation calls.  Sometimes it can escalate things to something worse.  Just hang up.

We have an answering machine and screen every call.  Lots of scam calls and now calls from boiler rooms with the elections race going.

And folks thought technology and pc's were the answer to so many ills in society.

I left the original voice mail message on my answering machine that is a man's voice. Make me feel a little safer if they think a man lives here.

I also do the reverse look up number to see if it is a scam call and then you can report them.

Re: When You Answer The Phone And No One Is There...

Since I changed from ATT to ATT Uverse I found that there are some new features, such as call block.

My phones have call block but it has to ring once first.  I'd prefer to block calls BEFORE they get through.   I think this thing at Uverse is doing just that.

Plus, since I changed, I was able to register with 'nomorobo'.    It also has blocking but I couldn't figure out how to get there, after I registered and saw it then. Unfortunately, they haven't answered my email from a week or so ago except to say that they were backed up.  In that interim I found the call blocking feature on my Uverse account.

We'll see how this all goes when campaign season gets in full gear.

At least I stopped (hopefully) getting calls from that number that just has 'Illinois' where the name would be.  I don't know what that's about but it was calling me several times a day for a while.   I don't know anybody from Illinois except my cleaning lady and I ascertained that she wasn't out of town.

But the 'Illinois' calls were kind of like what this thread is about.   That's troubling.  I have learned to pick up the phone, on unknown numbers, and not say anything to see if it was a robocall.  Then I'd hang right up and block the number.    But I picked up on the 'Illinois' call the first time and it just hung right up.  After that it was calling me about every hour for a while.  Then it would stop til the next day, so on and so forth.

IMO, it's just like our ISPs - they (the ISP or the phone carrier) should be able to discriminate between a legitimate number/email address and one that is not, and not let them through.
