I'm from southwest CT. Sometimes, if I hang out with NYers, I start to pick up their accent. Same thing happens when I spend time with Jersey relatives.

Hi Lynda, Smiley Happy

NJ does not have an accent. Cool Must be your imagination. {#emotions_dlg.lol}

I think it would be weird to have a newscaster not speak like the population does where he lives and works. So, whether it's in MA, NJ or NY....why would they speak with a western accent?

I had a suitemate in college who had a very thick Arkansas accent. She thought that she needed to sound more "neutral" before going out into the business world. She started taking voice lessons to help her get rid of her accent. I don't think she ever went very far with her voice lessons so she still has her accent.

Also, I had a roomie from Mobile, Alabama and she said "oil" and "on" weirdly....among other things. Smiley Happy

Could it be so that they can fit in any region of the country jobwise? Local news readers are often coming from and going across the country to take advantage of new career opportunities.

That would be the exception. I would think NY pays the highest.

I speak "city" Southern not "country/hick" Southern!

Hi, Hooty! That's what I speak now, too! But I grew up speaking "Appalachian."{#emotions_dlg.biggrin}

On the topic of newscasters, I can understand the tendency to homogenize their sound but I like it when they keep at least a wee bit of their homegrown accent.

I'm from CA, so I don't have an accent. But that map is kind of messed up! There are quite a few different accents in the NE, feven numerous different ones just for the state of NY, just as there are quite a lot of different accents in the south.
