Two words: air conditioning. I swear, if I ever move up to SF, I'm installing a/c regardless. Even if I only need it a couple of times a year, there's no way I'm going without.

Would I be correct in assuming you're of Scandinavian descent? I know that area was populated by people from there and from Wales, years ago.
