Is CA looking at desalination plants?

They say it is too expensive and would take years to build.

My local water company is most likely going to build a desal plant..but that water is probably going to cost us more than what we now pay.

Catalina has one, but evidently it isn't feasible for cities with large populations...I mean, how many people live year round on Catalina Island?

No water situations here in Nebraska that I know about.

My brother in law has a ranch in Central Coast of CA. They had to buy 6 wks of feed (at $1500) and then found it necessary to sell all their cattle. With rain it would still take 2 yrs to get adequate ground cover to replace cattle.

Re: What is the water situation where you live?

Yes, it's bad here. All the fountains on the LV Strip recycle their water plus we have had watering restrictions for a long time re our front lawn which at the present time is looking very good - nice and lush despite it. But, most opted for a desert landscape and pulled out their lawns. The water district was paying people to do it. Also, there is a faux grass out there but is expensive. I think it's creepy to use fake grass except on a golf course. Water level in Lake Mead is very low and local news said yesterday that 2 more feet and it will be at the lowest but supposedly is already at a historic low. We would pull out our lawn if forced to but that is not the case here yet. Have to go to a car wash that uses recycled water - ugh seems disgusting to me but oh well.

Re: What is the water situation where you live?

I live in the Palm Springs area & it's critical out here, so I try to be very conscious of what I use. With that said it's also a resort town with plenty of green golf courses. But I also know that there are companies that specialize in unique sprinkler systems that use reclaimed water to water the golf courses & landscaped yards. We have what's called desert scape in our yard & although our sprinklers do come on with a timer, it's just enough to keep our cactus going. Many of the yards around here are desert scape as well, so we try to do our part. And DH & I shower together Smiley Happy

We went to Curacao on vacation and their water came from a desalination plant. They are not a rich island.

I lived in Midland in West Texas which is a wealthy community where George H.W. Bush had his oil company. They have terrible water which tastes salty right out of the faucet. Everyone has a RO system. They talked about a desal plant but decided it was prohibtedly expensive to build and the water itself would be expensive. Their solution is to steal water from New Mexico but that another subject....

I know all about that reclaimed water. My parents lived on the golf course here which used it. When those sprinklers came on at night, the whole area smelled like a sewer. They were concerned because if it was windy, it blew in their windows.

We have great water and plenty of it. The water itself is free, but requires electricity for the pump to work. We have one for the house and a second dedicated well and pump for outdoor watering.

Actually they had a very small yard (patio home) about 12 X 30 and they did have artificial turf. That small yard cost over $2,000, which is why it's not more widely used.
