What is the current iteration of a "Swap Meet?"

When I was growing up, in Winter, you brought your Ice Skates to a "Swap Meet," and traded them for a pair of Ice Skates in yr new larger size.

Swap Meets (and Farmers' Markets)...have evolved from a rummage sale in the high school parking lot........to BIG enterprises taking up acres of land.

WOW, @Desertdi

That's  a far cry from what it used to be when I was a kid.  Thanks.   So it's all new items being sold?  Not necessarily home-made items, like some church tables at Christmas, but could be selling T-shirts, gadgets or swag even?

There is a strip mall near me..."second hand" items....but much better merchandise, like antique lamps, furniture, saddles, etc.

Individual shops, some of them run by charitable organizations.

@Desertdi   I love those kind of sales.  Seems like many of the best items are well cared for, the used, formerly newly, selling items.

So far, for the most part, I've found the treasures of yore, can seem made better, with more durability, & better, perhaps less plastic parts. IMHO.

We used to have a lot of Yard Sales & managed to grab some great, gently worn, sturdy, well built items.  Felt like a real catch!   Some of them, I even still have!

(added:   hmm   Woman Happy    I'll bet a well-worn, well-cared for Leather Saddle would be a gem!

From my childhood, swap meets are primarily junk. Also fakes (purses, shoes etc). But almost always junk. Never heard of swapping skates.

I heard of the term "swap meet" but always called them flea markets.

I Live 14 miles from Canton First Monday Trade Days.  It is the largest flea market in the world. You can Google it. Decades and decades ago it started out being mostly, what I called, "rusted farm implements".  It has since grown into something you can't even imagine. It covers over 400 Acres. It also includes an animal section.  The "dog grounds" used to be somewhat sketchy but from what I've heard the vendors there have cleaned up their act, thank goodness. I haven't been in many many years. You can find anything and everything. New or used. Lots of crafts. People from all over the country make the trip and spend a long weekend shopping, bartering, and eating.  It starts on the the weekend after the first Monday of each month.

BTW, this is the same little town where my car has been for the last 2+ months (sigh)
