There wasn't a Wacamaw in my neck of the woods, NE. Never heard of it until your post. Cool name for a store!
I do vaguely remember Grant's though. My mother loved that store and would drag me and my sister along as kids.
Another store that just came to mind was Zayres which eventually got bought out by Ames. My mom liked Zayres better so we didn't go to Ames much.
@sugar plum Zayre Corp. wanted to buy Marshall's but when that didn't work out they hired a former Marshall's Manager to create TJ Maxx.
Zayre's already had a chain of Hit Or Miss stores which the early days were small footprint shops with racks of random brands and styles of garments just arranged by category - Tops, Sweaters, Pants etc. just like TJX stores today.

@CatsyCline I second the Filene's in downtown Boston. I also loved Jordan Marsh, but Filene's was my favorite store. The original Basement was something you had to experience to truly appreciate it. Those suburban Basement stores were nothing lke the downtown experience!
In the suburbs we had a fabulous store called Grover Cronin. This was a beautiful upscale department store that was in business for over 100 years, and closed in the mid 80s. I miss going to the grand department stores. I hope to go to NYC and visit Bergdorf
Goodman after I go to the Trade Center memorial. Pastrami on rye at Katz' to follow!

I miss Dayton's. I bought a lot of beautiful clothes there over the years.

Elder-beerman, I could spend hours in that store.

I used to love being on State Street, especially when I was young and my family and I would be there on a Saturday.
That was back when all of the old department stores were still there, like Sears, Carson's, Wieboldt's and Montgomery Ward's.
My family liked to shop at Field's, too.
I miss it.
I also miss Woolworth's.
Thinking about it reminds me of stopping there with my maternal Grandmother.
Sometimes we'd stop at the lunch counter for something to eat, and sometimes we'd just wander through the store, shopping.
It seems like you could always find whatever you were looking for there.
