Re: What dumb things did you believe as a child?

[ Edited ]

I don't think I was misled in 'believing' in Santa, the Easter Bunny or Tooth Fairy.  (Ha, I gave them all caps.)

I'll have to ask my parents if they ever mentioned Santa as *real*.  I just don't remember believing or even worse, finding out the truth!  lol

The only thing I can remember that qualifies as 'dumb' was learning to tell time (analog clock).  Because I knew that a quarter was 25 cents, I used to mistake 'quarter after' or 'quarter of' to be 25 mins.  I took a long time to stop that.

One crazy thing I remember, when we went for drives through farmland and fields in the country, my dad would sometimes toot the horn to cows and/or horses along the fence line.  (Not blare the horn, just a little toot.)  We would beg him to do it.

Once time--he didn't--and I said 'Daddy, didn't you know that cow?'.

Everyone roared laughing.  They still do.

I feel like I'm the only one who ever knew nice nuns!  From my mother's teachers (several who took the train down in the summer and stayed with us for weeks) to my own kid's teachers.

When I was a little kid, my old man--who was horrible and abuseive--did, perhaps, in a fit of ...I don't know...did something for my sister and me that I've never forgotten (and I'm in my 70's now).

Keep in mind we lived in LA where it rarely rains and never snows.

I got up and Christmas morning and found SNOW on our front steps, with the imprint of shoes on it! I was so surprised; that me me into a True Believer in Santa Claus. Even though my old man was a terribble person, that memory still makes me smile.

@Lucky Charm  I was taught by nuns from nursery school through 12th grade and with the exception of one (I'm looking at you, Sr. Gonzaga) they were all great!  I have mostly good memories.

I actually believed among other things that Nuns were bald, someone  told me because of the Habit they wore that they didn't get any air to their hair and they would lose it well we know different many years later when most of the nuns would wear street clothes and they actually had nice hair but that was me as a kid.

I thought Heaven was a place where you rested on clouds and ate grapes!  It didn't sound like much fun. Now there are days I long for it!

I can't remember any others except that I worried about a lion hiding under my bed a few times.

When my Uncle got the first car in the family -late40’s he took everyone for a ride. Remember asking him was the scenery moving or were we. Lol. I also thought tree frogs that you hear in spring and fall were actually frogs up in trees. How simple life was back then in early 50’s

So weird... but when I'd hear a siren, I'd run in the house afraid they were coming after me or something bad was near me.  I have no idea why.   I guess the sound scared me and in my mind it was a scary thing to hear.   Didn't matter if it was a police siren or an ambulance or fire truck... I'd always run inside to be safe, I guess.

I remember reading about Anne Frank and how she thought pretty much the same--that all people had some good in them. And once I remarked,"Yes, and look what that got her." I took a lot of heat about that so I learned to keep some opinions to myself.

When I was young, I thought there was an intruder under my bed (not a monster, a person). Every night my dad would look under the bed and in the closet so I could relax and fall asleep. He gradually started doing the whole house. Years later, my son was staying with my parents  and helped him. He asked, "What are we looking for?" Thank goodness my dad was quick on his feet and answered "leaks."

My dad searched the house nightly until he was too weak with cancer to continue. He had my mother take over for him.

For me, I thought Rowdy and Gil lived underneath my bed for years.  I loved the show and was in love with Rowdy and watched the reruns every night.  I was not afraid of them but I would always jump into my bed from a distance and jump out of my bed.  I never ever let my feet be close to underneath the bed.  My poor Mom.
