Re: What does your name mean? Do you like it?

Like @amyb  My name means beloved.

However, my mother spelled it the French way. I like that it is different, although people usually spell it wrong!

Interesting thread. As a teacher for many years, I would have my students research how they got their name and its meaning. Also, if they liked it, did it fit them, or give an alternative. Also, taught students with many interesting and questionable names....before it was fashionable!

Old, very traditional quintessential Jewish name.  Rachel.  In Italy it's Raquel  or Rachele (pronounced with a hard k) (and in South America)   In Russia (of all places) you pronounce it exactly as in English.  My youngest sister has the new vogue in Hebrew names, Shira (which means Song)  Her middle name is Gala (which means dance)  So many of the Hebrew names are veering away from the traditional Sarah, Rebecca, Leah, etc.  Rachel means Ewe.  Not the greatest meaning. My middle name Leah (means weary)  So after learning my full name, my husband called me Weary little lamb.

My name wasn't "cool" in public school and you couldn't make a nick name.  And it was dowdy.  When I got older, Rachel became popular for a while.  Now it's back out of fashion.

Re: What does your name mean? Do you like it?

I don't know what my name means, per se, but I never liked it.  Part of that might be because of the mother monster SCREAMING it at me, throughout my childhood.

I go by a shortened version of my full first name (except on legal docs, of course), and I do like the shorter version.

Mine is one of those older names that seems to have been having  a comeback in recent years.

I remember when I was a kid - It seemed like a good percentage of the girls were either Linda, Debbie, or Kathy (always spelled only one way).  There was this girl named Barbara who I really admired because she had the most beautiful, super-long (like almost Crystal Gayle long) blonde hair that she always wore in a single braid.

My name means "divine".  I have always liked my name.

I was named after the theme song of a 1927 movie "Seventh Heaven"  which my father often sang to me.

My name means all honey or made of honey which I doubt I am.  I do like my name evne if the meaning doesn't suit me.  My parents had a heck of time agreeing on a name for me.  In fact I don't have a middle name b/c they could only agree on a first name.

Re: What does your name mean? Do you like it?

I had to look mine up since I knew it was french but not it's meaning.  It apparently is the French nickname for Elizabeth. From the Latin meaning “God's promise, pledged to God or God Is My Oath"  I really didn't like it much growing up since all the neighbors had Bordon milk delivered (Elsie the Cow was the picture on the front) and we had Hood.  My name is Elise but it was always confused with Elsie.  So I was always teased about being Elsie the cow.

Re: What does your name mean? Do you like it?

I don't want to say what it means, gives my name away. I didn't like my name when I was younger, it was not common and it stood out. But now I do, especially because my Mom gave it to me.

I love my middle name because it's her name.

Re: What does your name mean? Do you like it?

I didn't think it really meant anything so I just looked. I can't say what it means because that's pretty much saying what it is. How did I not figure that one out lol.

Apparently it was very popular at the time and I like it fine, but have never really come across many people my age with the name. Many variations but not the same.
