I agree with this. In fact, it was some of the words that first came to my mind as I read the title of the discussion. It's not "old" thinking. It is the truth. Each year and each generation that goes by it get's a little worse. Why do you think the world is in such disarray? Oh, I know there will be people who come out and say .......Oh, it's always been this way....and I would agree with that to a certain extent.....but the "proof is in the pudding" and smacking us right in the face. I hope we can wake up and see it before it is too late.
About fifty years ago, people had to protest to gain the right to vote, to ride up front on a bus, to attend any school they wished to and to simply drink from a water fountain.
About 100 years ago - over 50% of the USA couldn't vote because of their gender.
150 years ago, we enslaved a whole group of Americans - and had a bloody war over the "right" to own human beings and treat them as objects to be bought and sold.
I think we have come a looooong way!!!

Mominohio wasn't bemoaning equal rights for women or the end of slavery in her post, so I don't know why you mentioned that. You put words in others' mouths in order to make yourself look superior. There's good change and then there's decline.
I'm not insulting anyone. I think you've captured the prize for that. I won't stoop to attacking you or your opinions--which you've managed to do to me quite clearly.
My examples were simply that. Examples of what has been called the decline of society. I didn't say mominohio complained about them.
I refuse to get into a circular debate with you. You can continue to try to escalate my opinions into an argument. You'll just have to do it without me.
It is insulting to lump mominohio in with those who endorsed slavery and opposed equal rights for women, as is calling her old. The things she mentioned had nothing to do with that. So you find it insulting that someone asks you to be more civil when you debate?

The young cashier couldn't figure out how much to charge. It was unbelievable that he couldn't do the numbers in his head or on paper. He'd read out the amounts for just a couple of items, and I calculated it easily. He just picked a number and charged that. I told the customer, "You got a deal." I was shocked that he couldn't deal with such simple arithmetic. It wasn't like anyone had many items.
Ms X, It really is sad to think that young people are so, shall I say unintelligent. They can't add they can't spell they have no idea what proper English is.
The quality of education in many schools seems to have declined, at least as measured by the test results. I don't know why or what can be done about it.

I can't live my life with such a dour outlook. I don't see these things going away and I have faith the coming generations will do a better job than we did--which wasn't good at all!
I think you begin to really be old when you start thinking the generations following you are good for nothing.
Nothing dour about it, and it isn't a reflection of the younger generations, it has been a long slow slide for several generations now. The general decline in these qualities exist even when people with their rose colored glasses don't want to see it. And don't put words in my mouth (see bold area).
I stand by my opinions.
When you give up hope for the future, you are, indeed old.
Mominohio didn't say she'd given up hope for the future. Those are your words. And how insulting to say she's "old" because she observes the decline in our culture and moral standards. I don't see how anyone looking at our society today could fail to note it.
IMO old is a state of mind that has nothing to do with chronological age.
The "decline of moral standards" has been bemoaned for hundreds of years.
Moral standards were "declining" when slavery was abolished, women got the vote, women entered the work force, marriage equality became acceptable etc, etc. I think a lot of the angst comes from people who just can't accept change.
And a lot of people tout all change as good because they have no moral fabric, it is easier to give in to substandard values and behaviors than doing what is right, and comes from a sense of entitlement and laziness. Let's face it, it is easier to go with the flow rather than follow time honored principles and values.
If the options are 'old' or 'embracing all change, regardless of it's substance', I'll proudly wear the badge of old.

The ability to think and have common sense. The lack of cognitive thinking because of all of the gadgets that kids and adults use today. A very robotic society is rapidly taking over, even right now. It's scary, IMO. I'm always telling tweens to 'pay more attention' to what's going on around them. Be observant to their surroundings. No gadget can/will replace thinking things out and common sense. Only time will tell who/what wins out in the long run, (which is right around the corner).

Rights, privileges, liberties, honesty and truth, and all the good this nation fought, died, and stood for.
‎12-27-2014 01:17 PM
p.s. And never forget that, in a robotic society, 'someone' will be programming those robotics, gadgets, etc. As for who that 'someone' will be ................... It's much better to do our/your OWN thinking. Freedom is also a result of being totally in charge of our own selves. Please teach the youngsters in your lives to think, think, think and not depend on their various gadgets. A few I know can't even remember how to get to their often-visited local places without their GPS. Sad, but true. And scary. ........... And, p.s. again: The people who will eventually control the world are the ones who have been doing their own thinking.

Some of the "head in the sand" behavior is typical for that age group. Maybe technology makes it worse. But I do know that in school they are being helped to develop critical thinking skills. Btw, when I was a tween, my grandmother called me "testa per aria". She was Italian, it was her way of saying my head was in the clouds. And I couldn't blame it on technology back then. good points, marien.
The ability to work as a team, using critical thinking, and problem solving is what business is looking for today. Developing these skills is what will prepare the young ones for life in the business world.

Marien: Critical thinking is good ! Bravo! I recall 'problem solving', etc. Good to think on our own and not have to depend on 'things' and/or others. A bit of thinking is a good thing, in the long run.
