I can't live my life with such a dour outlook. I don't see these things going away and I have faith the coming generations will do a better job than we did--which wasn't good at all!

I think you begin to really be old when you start thinking the generations following you are good for nothing.

Nothing dour about it, and it isn't a reflection of the younger generations, it has been a long slow slide for several generations now. The general decline in these qualities exist even when people with their rose colored glasses don't want to see it. And don't put words in my mouth (see bold area).

I stand by my opinions.

When you give up hope for the future, you are, indeed old.

Mominohio didn't say she'd given up hope for the future. Those are your words. And how insulting to say she's "old" because she observes the decline in our culture and moral standards. I don't see how anyone looking at our society today could fail to note it.

IMO old is a state of mind that has nothing to do with chronological age.

The "decline of moral standards" has been bemoaned for hundreds of years.

Moral standards were "declining" when slavery was abolished, women got the vote, women entered the work force, marriage equality became acceptable etc, etc. I think a lot of the angst comes from people who just can't accept change.

mstyrion: I don't understand why you won't debate without the insults. Read your posts again if you don't know what I'm talking about. Mominohio wasn't bemoaning equal rights for women or the end of slavery in her post, so I don't know why you mentioned that. You put words in others' mouths in order to make yourself look superior. There's good change and then there's decline.

Re: What do you think will disappear in the near future?

For me cable TV, CDs, and a desktop are no longer a part of my life.

Checks and stamps are used so rarely I have to remember where they are.

Hardcopy bank statements, newspapers, cashed checks, and bills don't come anymore.

Snail mail is so rare I only check once a week.

Neither my house nor car work with keys anymore and I have not been into a bank in years.

I am liking it and wish more things worked off my phone. Isn't it nice that coupons do?

Re: What do you think will disappear in the near future?

Cable TV - and I sold advertising in that industry for 20 years!

Time Warner is once again raising rates an average of $9 a month.

They are pricing themselves into extinction.

I got cable TV for free for those 20 years, and now I get it through my HOA for just $40 a month.

If I can get it for $40 - why are they charging the average person living in a single home $100 or more????

I enjoy live news and sports - and watch few movies on TV - so cable is still my best option.

But as younger people "cut the cable" - it will become as outdated as a landline phone.

Ahhhh, but here's the thing though. In the event of a natural (or un-natural) disaster, power can be out for days. Eventually that cell phone will need to be re-charged. A land-line doesn't have to be.

Also, when you call 9-1-1, from a cell phone, the dispatch operator won't see your address on their screen. Whereas, when you call 9-1-1 from a land-line, they will.

Plus, with a cell phone, you always have to worry about getting reception. A land-line, you don't.

As for laptops and desktops, you can do more with them than you can with an Ipad. As nice as Ipads are, they have their limits as to what they can do.

So, that's why land-line phones, laptop/desktop computers will never go away 100%.

There will always be a need for them.

Moved very rural 10 years ago. First thing I learned - get/keep a battery backup/corded landline. In a bad storm, we often are without power for long periods of time and more than once it's affected cell towers. During 9/11 I lived in DC area and the cell airways were so overloaded, no calls would go through. We all have generators to charge cell phones but not a one of us feels comfortable getting rid of landlines.

Stamps, I agree. There are still a few things I can't pay online but the other day I realized that the stamps I have are still Christmas ones from last year cuz I rarely use them.

I agree with this. In fact, it was some of the words that first came to my mind as I read the title of the discussion. It's not "old" thinking. It is the truth. Each year and each generation that goes by it get's a little worse. Why do you think the world is in such disarray? Oh, I know there will be people who come out and say .......Oh, it's always been this way....and I would agree with that to a certain extent.....but the "proof is in the pudding" and smacking us right in the face. I hope we can wake up and see it before it is too late.

Golfcartrider: I was in line at a convenience store about 10 years ago when the electricity to the register went out. The young cashier couldn't figure out how much to charge. It was unbelievable that he couldn't do the numbers in his head or on paper. He'd read out the amounts for just a couple of items, and I calculated it easily. He just picked a number and charged that. I told the customer, "You got a deal." I was shocked that he couldn't deal with such simple arithmetic. It wasn't like anyone had many items.

Ms X, It really is sad to think that young people are so, shall I say unintelligent. They can't add they can't spell they have no idea what proper English is. {#emotions_dlg.ohmy}

I think you are over generalizing.

I'm not insulting anyone. I think you've captured the prize for that. I won't stoop to attacking you or your opinions--which you've managed to do to me quite clearly.

My examples were simply that. Examples of what has been called the decline of society. I didn't say mominohio complained about them.

I refuse to get into a circular debate with you. You can continue to try to escalate my opinions into an argument. You'll just have to do it without me.
