Yes, the 'thinkers' will rule the world. Just what I meant! After all, they will be the ones to program the future robotics, whatever, etc.

Re: What do you think will disappear in the near future?

p.s. You are in a good area, Marien. Rising stars/thinkers in the making! Something I often remind tweens about 'thinking' on their own around here....... Hopefully they're 'listening'/paying attention.........lol. I'm in an area where lots of tweens/teens are always looking down, texting, walking, even driving. Everyone around here has been complaining that folks (even adults) should look up, see what's going on around them. If nothing else, it's dangerous (for them, and also others).

I can't live my life with such a dour outlook. I don't see these things going away and I have faith the coming generations will do a better job than we did--which wasn't good at all!

I think you begin to really be old when you start thinking the generations following you are good for nothing.

Nothing dour about it, and it isn't a reflection of the younger generations, it has been a long slow slide for several generations now. The general decline in these qualities exist even when people with their rose colored glasses don't want to see it. And don't put words in my mouth (see bold area).

I stand by my opinions.

When you give up hope for the future, you are, indeed old.

Mominohio didn't say she'd given up hope for the future. Those are your words. And how insulting to say she's "old" because she observes the decline in our culture and moral standards. I don't see how anyone looking at our society today could fail to note it.

IMO old is a state of mind that has nothing to do with chronological age.

The "decline of moral standards" has been bemoaned for hundreds of years.

Moral standards were "declining" when slavery was abolished, women got the vote, women entered the work force, marriage equality became acceptable etc, etc. I think a lot of the angst comes from people who just can't accept change.

And a lot of people tout all change as good because they have no moral fabric, it is easier to give in to substandard values and behaviors than doing what is right, and comes from a sense of entitlement and laziness. Let's face it, it is easier to go with the flow rather than follow time honored principles and values.

If the options are 'old' or 'embracing all change, regardless of it's substance', I'll proudly wear the badge of old.

Boy, the last poster hit the whole thing right on the head. I remember the days when there was such honesty my Dad had only to shake on an agreement, all the old standby principles and values were in operation. We would have never won WWII without a people dedicated to do the right thing. We are trying to instill these values in our grandchildren; yes, I am old and proud to stand up for what still has substance.

They've been "predicting" that land-lines are going to go the way of the horse and carriage for years now.

I don't think that they'll ever go away.

I also don't think desktop and laptop computers will ever go away 100%.

There will always be printed books, (imho).

Just like even though we live in a digital age, people still use phonographs, and play vinyl records.

Phonographs?! Who on earth still uses phonographs?

LOL My future son-in-law was visiting over Christmas, and found one of these antique phonographs on Craigslist. He ended up buying it as he and my daughter have a century home and it is filled with antiques. They have another of these in their library at home and the latest will be for the 3rd floor.

Re: What do you think will disappear in the near future?

Very interesting reading in this post. Of course "things will change" along with technological advances. Some will see them as good while others, not so much! What I don't get is why some have to mention the long ago past when the title of this thread distinctly askes about the future. The ol saying "history repeats itself" could very well be true in some aspects, but when it comes to technology? While it will certainly change, I do not forsee it moving backwards.x'xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxFor those around my age, 75, that don't or cannot see a morality change? To each be their own. Now for those that want to talk about history going back through the decades I have lived? Reading about them is much different than living them.Anyone thinking reading about them is the eqivelent to experiencing them certainly can talk about their book knowledge, however suggesting those that are less book educated are less knowledgeable? Xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx OP, thank you for a vert insightful thread.

I hope I'm wrong but my answer is Marriage. Every week we get a newspaper listing the number/names of marriages and divorces in our county. It seems the number of divorces always outweigh the number of marriages in our small area of the universe. It appears there is a huge problem with commitment! This is so sad. JMO.

Who says that you need a piece of paper to prove that you are committed to another person?

Two people can be just as committed to each other, as a couple who did decide to marry.

Try telling that to Judge Judy. She calls that "playing house."........Wink

Some of technology will only go 'backward' when something bad happens. They're already advising us to make sure to print out and save all bank statements, and important documents. Just in case. Luckily, I don't use computer for anything important and my bank statements come in via paper mail. I always like to see office folks have a clipboard, with written notes/notations. That way, they can refer to it, seeing which important calls have been made to customers, clients, patients, etc. and checked off (and which ones haven't as yet).

I can go along with that. I have also heard that it is good to keep cash on hand in case of an emergency, and the ATM's are out of service.

If ATM's and such are down, then one can not use credit/debit cards.

That's why is is a good idea to always have cash on hand.

And that's why cash will never go out of style.

Yes, always have cash hidden away, just in case. For food and necessities for at least a few days or so. Preferably go to a 'mom and pop' grocery store. They just might have a good, old fashioned cash register! No problems there, for sure.

All this technology was supposed to make us more efficient and paperless, but it doesn't seem that it has.

I am just old enough that I like a paper copy of things. I keep my bank statements in a file and in chronological order, I don't bank online, and I don't even have or use debit cards. I like to try to minimize the possibility of my info getting out in the wrong hands, and I want a paper trail to prove what I have done financially. Some will scoff, but it works for me, and has saved my you know what more than once.

One of my New Year's resolutions is going to be to operate more on a cash basis. Not everything can be done so, but I am going to reduce my use of credit cards, and continue to pay much of what I do daily with cash, like gas, groceries, holiday shopping etc. For me it will be about controlling spending, and nothing does that better than having cash in your wallet and watching how fast it goes. When you use credit, or debit or even write checks, it doesn't have the same effect as watching that wallet empty out. I even started a Christmas club again this year, and will be paying all cash for Christmas next year, with a goal to put half of that Christmas Club check right back in the account and start for the following year. If I do that each year (only use half and re deposit the other half) it is a kind of forced savings that is untouchable all year long.
