Re: What do you think of painting bricks on a home

Nope....brick doesn't hold the color and it peels....it may look ok initially but I wouldn't want to be bothered having it painted yearly.  I love houses that are different but I also love natural brick...

Not all brick is created equal.

The pic you posted shows a great improvement with the painting.

There's an old pricey neighborhood nearby, all the homes are painted over brick.

All over the same color paint, no contrast anywhere except the front door.

I have brick only in the front, the other 3 sides are siding.

I have seriously considered having the brick painted next time the house needs a paint job.

I like the look ... my first house had a partial brick facade - if I were still living there, I'd paint them.

Re: What do you think of painting bricks on a home

We live in a brick ranch built in 1962.  When we bought it 29 years ago, it was a very very ordinary red brick color---the plainest brick you can imagine.  We painted it light gray with black shutters in 1991 and it has had only two coats ever.  It has never peeled, faded, or discolored.  Everyone loves it and so do we!!!  We would do it again in a heartbeat.

@Jackhound Mom Apparently there are but the people went ahead and painted anyhow. The neighbors are all upset and the Facebook page got so bad that it was taken down.I have no idea what will come of this but I guess it is too late now.

@dex

I have seen some painted brick homes that look really beautiful, and others that look very unkempt....tattered....run down.

To me, it all depends on the details -- the landscaping, the style and condition of and the paint on the front door, the shutters, etc. If the home's surroundings look well maintained, a white washed brick house (even after it begins to peel --- which it will!) can look quite elegant and stately. I love the houses in the photos the other member @faeriemoon posted.

I am glad the person painted the brick. I do not care for all the homes looking the same. Boring IMO. Maybe others will follow in his gated community,

Love this !!!  I like painted or whitewashed brick but of course it all depends on the color.  This whitewash is well done.

Re: What do you think of painting bricks on a home

Some old houses with painted bricks should stay painted because the brick was meant to be painted. It's softer and more porous than brick meant to be used without paint, and without the protection of that paint, the house will eventually suffer from mold and water damage.

I live in a very old unpainted brick house and like it, and one of its appeals when buying was less maintenance (although repointing is a pain). In some of the nearby older developments (1950s and 1960s), some owners have painted their neat little brick bungalows white or cream, with contrasting doors, shutters, and trim, and it's quite sweet. I love one house in particular, a Cape Cod with a cerulean blue front door with black iron hardware and a curving stepping stone walk.

There's been a lot of development in my area, and I haven't seen masons building anything but posts for gates and laying walks. All the brick and stone on the  new McMansions and single family homes appears to be veneer. Painting it is one thing, but I'd worry about what would happen if a future owner wants to strip it. The whole face might come off.
