Have things gotten this bad that the NFL feels the need to sponsor a Play60 program for children? Encouraging kids, reminding parents, teachers, schools etc. that kids need to play for at least 60 minutes a day...Duh, shouldn't we all know that? I am not picking on the NFL, I think it is a great program, just sad that there even needs to be one.

Unfortunately disfunctionalism will always be with us.

Maybe they do need to be told, I dunno. It seems like many kids these days spend most of their free time in front of computers, TV's or video games.
Some good old fashioned play during recess and supervised after school might do them some good.
Maria Montessori said "Play is the work of the child". Children need play to develop physically, socially, emotionally, and mentally and in every way I would think.
They can learn many skills through play that will be useful in later life.
It relieves their stress (kids get stressed too!) and helps them to learn better at school.
I'm not a psychologist or teacher. Just a mom of three (now grown) with an opinion, I guess.

Kids today spend too much time in front of a TV either watching cartoons or playing video games. I think this is why child obesity currently runs rampant in our country.

Of course, parents and kids need to be told. The world has changed since we were children. When we were kids, we raced home from school, changed our clothes and grabbed a snack and raced out the door to play with our friends. Play was all physical; tag, hop scotch, stick ball, dodge ball yada yada yada. Most kids cannot do that today for a variety of reasons. Many attend after school programs because both parents work, the streets aren't as safe as they once were, kids are addicted to tv, video games, their computers and their phones. Yes, indeed. Parents and kids have to educated about the importance of physical activity.

Someone needs to do it.

I realize that many kids see professional athletes as heroes or mentors and such, but in reality, most professional sports would be better served tending to their own problems with players that do everything from abuse drugs, animals and women, to you name it.
Their message to kids about playing is rather overshadowed by their collective lack of decency and their lack of ability to control that.
