Many non religious parents find a need for this. Kind of like going to rehab.i don't know their sons circumstance, as I do not watch the show. Parents do what they think is best. Their are many parents who are not religious and send their kids to camps where kids have died from the stringent routines. You don't have to be a Duggar or a Kardashian, thankfully. There are plenty of well-adjusted, normal teens.
Josh was sent to a disciplinary camp. I don't know if some of the other boys went there or not.
They sent Josh there because he was starting to have some independent thoughts which is a big no no.

When Josh Duggar was showing some signs of being “rebellious” years ago, they sent him to Gothard’s military boot camp for young men, the ALERT Academy. He returned much subdued. They’ve done the same with some of the girls, sending them to Gothard’s Journey to the Heart programs, where they are reminded of how wi*ked and sinful they are and told again and again that following God means obeying their earthly parents.
*put a C there. Wouldn't let me post the word.
I'm sorry....I'm not understanding the problem. What's wrong with a rebellious teenager returning much more subdued and calm? What's wrong with girls learning how to be a faithful woman of God?

Snarky, one thing I've learned from being here is that you can't educate people and/or change their minds if their minds are closed. Brii believes what she believes. No harm I guess. The facts are that every Duggar boy will attend the ALERT training camp. That's where Joseph Duggar earned his EMT cert.. It's a religious based survival camp. They specifically state it is not a "boot camp" nor is it for "troubled youth". They feel that it helps boys make the transition into Christian manhood.

The facts are this camp is not what it appears to be. (or what they tell the public it is)

And you would know this because you have gone there and hidden in the brush to observe their goings on? Or because you've read something slanted against them in the media? And please don't bring up that the leader of the movement it's affiliated with has been accused of abuse. He has not been charged with any crime but if he did what he's accused of he has plenty of company among the clergy of every religion. His transgressions (if there be any) have nothing to do with the value and effectiveness of his organization.

My upbringing and ideals are very close to the Duggars. I understand them perfectly (except the pants thing...can't handle not wearing pants). It's kind of fascinating to me how people think they're so unusual. The many kids thing and the pants thing are the only things unusual about them to me. *shrug*

Your view is the correct one? Did you go there?

I'm with ya, Snarky. I loved having sibs and helped care for the younger ones when they came along. I know it made me a more responsible person and I learned a lot about cooking, finances and the managing of a home before I was on my own. But there were not 19 of us! And I so agree about the pants.
