Years ago by the time school started in August, the leaves were drying and falling off the crabapple tree in the front yard. By September 1st, that tree was bare, and leaves on my tulip poplar were also drying rapidly and covering the front yard. My girls caught the bus at 6:50 a.m., and needed light jackets against the cool morning air as they waited at the end of the driveway.
We took the crabapple tree out around the year 2000, and I already have dry leaves falling from my tulip poplar. Around here we listen for the katydids and frogs to signal fall.

For me, the 1st signs of Autumn have already started...
Certain bird species have started their 'flocking' mode...Starlings, the adult birds have started molting to put on their winter plumage...especially the Robins and Goldfinches...
The Barn Swallows have started grouping together near dusk feeding on bugs...
The crickets have started chirping...
We are anticipating our 1st migrating hummingbird any day now...
Within the next week or two we should start seeing the Orioles and Nighthawks migrating...
For me, although I look forward to Fall for a variety of reasons...I loath winter. We have already lost about 40 minutes of daylight already

@feline groovy @Perkup Maybe those Redwing blackbirds know something we don't know. Beautiful birds... I'd never seen one until a few years ago we were camping in Colorado near a pond with lots of cattails. Those birds were thick around that pond.

This will be about 30 minutes from my house, near the Cradle Of Forestry.
I attended a wedding standing where this photographer is standing.

@ECBG Where were the bride and groom? At the top of the falls? Beautiful venue for a wedding

Good point, K, as animals do sense natural occurrences before we do.
How nice that you got to view their 'family reunion' (or whatever, LOL) nearby.

Ah, yes. That's why I love raking leaves at my mom's house...I get to clean my shoes off afterwards.
