Coincidently, I just had a long talk with DS, DD and my granddaughters who have just started mostly emailing me (computers for school) or texting me. I asked them to use the phone to CALL.

We seem to be victims of the cell phone. Yes they ARE a neccessity, but how many times a day do you see people checking their email, looking down to text...fingers flying through the letters.

My Girls do not write thank you notes for gifts...I get a text. I finally told them that's not acceptable and sent them each a box of thank you notes. OMG! You should see their handwriting!!! They rarely use it.

@Shanus

ITA agree with you on everything you said..... And I was talking to a small shop owner and he laughed and said that a lot of younger customers dont know how to write in cursive to sign the credit card purchase slip......

My niece and nephews are the same way as yours.....won't call or even email, just an occasional text or Facebook mention that's it.....And my SIL apologizes and used to write the "thank you notes" for them.....these are older kids too....Woman Frustrated ...How I solved that problem....I stopped sending them Birthday and Christmas Cards which also included money gift cards....I just got tired of being just a Santa Claus figure for them....I just send cards and gifts to my brother and SIL only who do call and connect with me all the time....Even my SIL admitted, "I guess I didnt teach the kids very well in common courtesy and gratitude"....SMH!!!

From a baby boomer perspective, I would like the millenials to understand that words and thoughts don't come to me quite as fast as they used to.  I would like them to give me more than 5 or 10 seconds to get out what I have to say.  Often times they see you struggling to do that and they think they should just give you the word they think you're looking for .  I think they mean well but if they would just give us a tad more time we might just come up with it on our own.  Then again, we might not!!  In all fairness to the millenials, older people can on on and on at times.  Probably because they are lonely but we do have to watch that we don't bore people to death or tell a clerk about our day when people are waiting in line!  I think older people and younger people need to be together more so we can learn from each other.  I am not seeing a whole lot of that today and I think it is sad.

And even when families of different generations are together...everyone is in their own world on their phones....just look at restaurants instead of actual live communication there is silence, or the only noise is from a video game that's being played on a phone.....a waitress even remarked to our group of friends that it was nice to hear some real conversation going on at our table....she pointed to a group that was all on their phones and said "she didnt get it...."

Let's be honest:  there are people who want to eliminate cursive writing from the school curriculum.  American and World history classes are practically non-existent.  Life without a calculator?  Unheard of!  Society evolves, but there are some things which should remain constant:  respect for where we came from, respect for the  people who created our great country and its core values, respect for where we are today and where we can go from here.

Well said!  And the lack of respect shows with "hey boomer"...🙄  What if I said "hey entitled one".....😄

One of the sports guys I watch on TV told a funny story, he had gone to a fast food place to buy breakfast, and the computers/registers went down and the cashiers didnt know how to count and do the math to make change manually......SAD commentary on education today

Excellent thread.

Whatever happened to the word (thought) 'Peace'?

If we (all) could only strive toward it, we might be able to take a a few steps forward.

Instead of backward.

Peace and safety to all.

I believe that our children should be able to read the Constitution in its original form - not rely upon blubs from the press.   Further, being able to do math w/o a calculator is good for the brain.

There is no reason to abandon simple skills in order to embrase technological advances.

It is very sad that some belive that todays' education and young people should be under indictment because one individual was unable to count change manually.

My teenage grandchildren and their friends are so far advanced from where I was at their age it is astounding.

They must do things differently than I did as this is the way of the world now.

Re: What Is Happening To Communication???

@Spurt   I put them on the spot and say, "Oh, the gift cards must have gotten lost because I never received a Thank you". Then, I get the, "oh, I'm sorry I didn't let you know, I bought.....". Getting really close to not sending any more cards/checks either. Not sure how my DIL was raised, but my DS knows better.... I made sure of that.

Re: What Is Happening To Communication???

I think two aspects of today's communication affect it the most: 1) asynchronous communication--I can text or email someone and they can get back to me immediately or later, depending on availability and 2) networked information--I can link to other information so easily.

Re: What Is Happening To Communication???

Yes, I've heard of gadget withdrawl symptoms similar to what another poster posted.

Looking around my area, seems as though many/most people (even seniors) are looking down at their phones, while walking, even in parks.

Imo, it's nice to look around, enjoy the trees, birds, and scenery while walking through a nice, peaceful park.

But, 'that's just me' and the way my mind thinks.

I so agree with you.  So sick of "politically correct" nonsense.
