Hi happy readers,
I finished Grey Mountain by John Grisham, and it was pretty good. It was typical Grisham, small country lawyers fighting big business. This time, they're in West Virginia, fighting the coal industry. I enjoyed it, but I have to say it was so similar to many of his other books. I think I'd like to read something by him that has nothing to do with law. I loved "A Painted House," which proves he can write well in other genres.
I'm now reading a book I bet none of you have read, Florence Gordon, by Brian Morton. He is one of my favorite authors, and this is his latest. The title character is a cantankerous 75-year old feminist living in NYC who is an author and teacher. She enjoys living alone to be herself and write her memoirs, but her son, daughter-in-law and granddaughter invade her life and move to NYC, causing her life to change in many ways. I'm really enjoying it.
When I'm done, I will be reading Revival by Stephen King. Has anyone read it yet? It's on my Kindle from the library and I have at least a week left on it. The good thing about having a library ebook is as long as you don't put on your Wifi, you can keep that book as long as you want, even if it's expired and they take it away. Just don't turn on your Wifi and you can keep it forever!!

SUNNY, I am about half way through REVIVAL. It is a good read. I am new to Stephen King since 11/22/63 (or is it 11/23/63? ... Always get that wrong). I really like how he gets into his character's head. I love authors with strong character development skills. No idea how this is going to end but am enjoying it after going through a few so so reads that were too predictable like Grisham's GREY MOUNTAIN. I never finished that one and don't think I'll return to it. Happy reading! LM

Just finished Alysia Abbott's Fairyland ( nf) about a girl who loses her mother at a very young age and is brought up by her bi-sexual father who eventually dies of AIDS. Very emotional book but I loved it.
Going to start Miranda Beverly-Whittemore's Bittersweet.

I just finished this one- (part two of a trilogy). The first one was not available from my library, but I had downloaded two and three. I just returned two, and I think I'll return three without reading. It's very slow (to me) but I thought I would pass along this "mystery" article.
http://www.theguardian.com/books/2014/oct/15/who-italian-novelist-elena-ferrante
Ferrante brought out My Brilliant Friend, the first volume of a trilogy known as "The Neapolitan Novels." Narrated by a 60something writer named Elena, the book feels like Ferrante's personal origin myth, her Portrait of the Artist as a Young Woman. This seems even clearer in volume two, The Story of a New Name, just out in a keen English version by Ferrante's regular translator, Ann Goldstein.
"The Neapolitan Novels" tell the story of Elena Greco and Lila Cerullo, who meet at age 8 in early 1950s Naples. They bond over their love of books and their yearning for a life larger than what's offered by their poor, working-class neighborhood that cruelly grinds down everyone, especially women. Where Elena is a bright, accommodating girl eager for approval — she's a classic A-student — her brilliant friend Lila is more gifted, sexier and utterly implacable — she does what she wants. In a decision that alters their lives, Elena's parents pay to let her continue beyond grade school, but Lila's father refuses.
As The Story of a New Name begins, the ripples of this decision couldn't be more obvious. Even as Elena goes to high school and pines for a handsome upperclassman, the gorgeous Lila is getting married at 16 to Stefano, a local grocer who buys her clothes like Jackie Kennedy's, but whom she holds in contempt.
Over the course of the novel, we watch their destinies diverge. Elena is thwarted in love and feels intimidated when she starts mingling with the educated classes at college in Pisa. Lila is trapped in a vulgar, gilded cage whose bars she shakes until her husband beats her. As ever, Elena feels overshadowed by Lila, whose life always seems more incandescent than her own, while Lila envies Elena's shot at escaping their old neighborhood's small-mindedness and machismo.

USEDTOBE, I just finished REVIVAL. I am a fairly new Stephen King reader. I started with 11/22/63. I was not a fan of the big horror books. Since 11/22/63, Mr. MERCEDES and now Revival I consider myself a King fan. Some times you realize how bad some authors can be when you read a really good author. To me, King is a master story teller. He slowly draws you in and, before you know it, you're hooked. If the whole book was like the last 50 pages, I would have had trouble. I thought this book was very well written.
when I'm compare this book to John Grisham's newest release, I see how Grisham churns our his books with the same formula. All about the little guy taking on the big guy etc. etc. Same theme every time. I could never take a steady diet of that. I read a few chapters of his new book and stopped. I doubt I will go back to it. On the other hand, can't wait to see what King produces next!
I would be interested in your take. I'm won't go into details on REVIVAL so as not to spoil for other readers!
Will copy this to Lainey's thread for other readers. LM‎11-23-2014 03:33 PM

A CALL TO ARMS, ERNEST HEMMINGWAY for our book club. Just finished THE LANGUAGE OF FLOWERS and it was good. Lots of flashbacks to her early life. Both are books from the library, didn't put on kindle because they are book club meetings. I have a lot of the above mentioned on kindle.
