Re: What Are You Reading --- May 2014

SAgal, how ironic you posted about Greg Iles when I happen to be reading the first Penn Cage novel; THE QUIET GAME. I am a huge Greg Iles fan, my most favorite being BLOOD MEMORY. I also picked up NATCHEZ BURNING not realizing Penn Cage had prior books so I decided to catch up on Penn Cage before I read NATCHEZ BURNING. I think I'll read THE GARDEN OF BURNING SANDS by CORBAN ADDISON in between my Greg Iles Penn Cage marathon. Loving the new releases this year!

I finished Greg Iles' books THE TURNING ANGEL and THE DEVIL'S PUNCHBOWL after reading his first Penn Cage novel. Then read his newest Penn Cage novel - NATCHEZ BURNING. All great books - makes me want to visit Natchez, Mississippi! All wonderful. For a change of pace I'm reading a newly released book called BITTERSWEET about a rich girl and the "poor" girl who becomes her friend - good so far. I'm still waiting for SUNALA to find the best book since ORDINARY GRACE!!!!!!

Just started Bittersweet.

They have just spent the first night there...so far love the writing and will see if the author can include something new in the oft told story of the poor thinking they might belong somewhere other than the woodshed in the rich family.

This week I read Field of Prey by John Sandford. It is his newest in the prey series. This book was very good, but gruesome. It is the story of a serial killer in a small Minnesota community. The process of solving this case seems to miss some obvious clues along the way, but of course comes to a satisfying resolution. Most of the regular secondary characters in this series are involved in only marginal ways. I hope the new character, Catrin, becomes a regular.

I finished LAST TRAIN TO ISTANBUL by Ayse Kulin. I thought it was a good story, but it dragged for me half way through and then I was just wanting it to be over.

SWEET I'll be interested in what you thought about WIVES OF LOS ALAMOS as I was thinking about reading that since its here in New Mexico.

I just finished Eleanor and Park, a YA fiction by Rainbow Rowell. This book has mostly 4 and 5 star reviews on LibraryThing. It was only a pretty solid 3 stars from me, but I was not as enamored as everyone else.

Before that I read The Way the Crow Flies, Anne-Marie McDonald, which I can't recommend highly enough. Fabulous! {#emotions_dlg.thumbup}

Next up is Sarah Addison Allen's latest, Lost Lake. I've enjoyed all her previous whimsical magical books.

And I have to say I wholeheartedly agree with Sunny about all Kent Haruf's books. One of my favorite authors as well.

You may be the only other person I know who read "The Way the Crow Flies". What a powerful book. I loved it even though the subject was rather disturbing. Beautifully written. Makes Jodi Piccoult and Gillian Flynn look like "want-a-be"s.

I'm currently reading "Becoming Jane Erye" by Sheila Kohler, a fictionalize biograghy of Charlotte Bronte which contains true historical facts and insights about the Bronte sister's upbringing to show how their own lives and acquaintances influenced their writings. Going to have to revisit Jane Eyre and Emily's Wuthering Heights again after reading this.

Supposed to be reading Still Life with Breadcrumbs by Anna Quinlen for book club but have no interest in it. Has anyone read and enjoyed it? I need encouragement.

I have a great book about Emily Bronte, it's called Chainless Soul. I just love it and reread it once a year. Emily was such a fascinating person.

WIVES OF LOS ALAMOS is surely different from what I'm used to reading. It's written in the third person i.e., we, us. It's fast reading and interesting. Starts in the 30's and now I'm in the 40's. Different kind of book for me.

SAGAL, I want to read Bittersweet. I assume the author is Miranda Beverly-Whittemore?

Friends - there is another book titled Bittersweet coming out Aug. 14th by the author who wrote THE THORN BIRDS - Colleen Mc Cullough. It sounds very good. Setting is Australia circa 1920's - 1930's about 2 sets of twin sisters.
