Re: What Are You Reading --- May 2014

I just read Orphan Train and I loved it. Been waiting for it for a long time. I never used to like books about kids, but the ones I read 'starring' kids were so good. The Snow Child, The Cape Ann (my fave), The Mourning Hours all come to mind. I certainly don't go looking for them, but there they are! More and more often.

Judaline, Glad you liked it. Orphan Train is on my "best of this year so far" list. Great characters well developed, well-written intriguing story, and I learned about a period of time in our history that I knew nothing about so it was enlightening. What more can a book deliver?

I know, I knew nothing about this! We knew they came to Ellis Island but not much more, altho I know they had a hard time making it here. Sometimes I wonder if they wouldn't have been just as well off toughing it out at home-the life here in many books was grim for most of them-oh, I know there were exceptions.

Re: What Are You Reading --- May 2014

I just bought today the Nora Roberts book, The Next Always which is Book one in her Inn Boonsboro Trilogy. I think it has romance and drama and is set as most of her books in a small town. It appears to be about three brothers who run a inn in that small town and the rekindle of a crush one of the brothers had when younger. She returns to town a widow. Soon I'll be getting two Thomas Kincade/ Katherine Spencer books whose titles I can't remember. I hope to get to the bookstore soon to get Jackie Collins latest spicy novel Confessions of a Wild Child and Jason Priestley's self titled memoir.

I just finished an outstanding new book, ( I received an advance copy) soon to be released May 27th. It called THE SECRET LIFE OF VIOLET GRANT by BEATRIZ WILLIAMS and it's got my vote for "Beach Read of the Year"! She also wrote A HUNDRED SUMMERS, another great book. There is historic drama, passion, and a battered suitcase filled with secrets...

Re: What Are You Reading --- May 2014

Anyone with a love of Boston and our crazy ways and history might enjoy the book I just read (in 2 days .. a record for me). Strangled by Brian McGrory. A humorous crime thriller about the "return of the Boston Strangler". Is it the real Boston Strangler or a copy cat 40 years later?

Protagonist is a reporter for a fictional Boston daily and the interplay between the beat reporters, Boston police, and Boston politics (Commissioner who made a name for himself as lead detective on the 1960's investigation and is now running for Mayor) makes for a fun, suspenseful, quick, weekend diversion. This is the third in his Jack Flynn series but the first I have read. Author is a columnist for the Boston Globe.

Re: What Are You Reading --- May 2014

I just started reading Shine Shine Shine by Lydia Netzer. I had never heard of this author until I was reading the book reviews in the current issue of *FIRST Magazine for Women, and her new novel, How to tell Toledo from the Night Sky, was mentioned. That one sounds great, but it is on order at the library, so I decided to read her first novel. So far, very good.

Thanks for the responses to Scarlet Pimpernel and the two movie versions. I will definitely have to watch the newer movie version.

*I didn't see Netzer's book in FIRST; I saw it in the current issue of Good Housekeeping. There were a lot of good books mentioned there as well.
