Well, Twaddle! I just wrote a paragraph about my liking for Joanne Harris' CHOCOLAT and the sequel THE GIRL WITH NO SHADOW, and when I hit "Submit" it vanished into the ether. The two books are charming -- about a mysterious woman who comes to a remote French village and begins changing lives by opening a chocolate shop. More about character than plot, the books are a delightful place to spend time and quite unlike anything else I can think of that I've read. Warning: They'll make you crave a cup of French Sipping Chocolate!

Hi, insomniac, I just found out about the movie since I read the book. I've got a friend who's a MAJOR Johnny Depp fan and book lover. I'm going to get the DVD and give her a "watch and drool" party!

Joanne Harris is a favorite author of mine. She writes very diverse stories. Her British mystery, Gentlemen and Players was so different from Chocolat. I also enjoyed FIve Quarters of an Orange, WWII story. I read Holy Fools and wasn't that impressed, but I guess I can't love them all. Have others of hers in my "to-read" pile.

Just started To Kingdom Come by Will Harris, a sequel to Some Danger Involved. Mysteries set in Victorian London with interesting characters, diabolical plot, and some humor. Good summer diversion. Short (less than 300 pages) quick fun books.

Just finished LOST GIRLS by Robert Kolker discussed above. I found the first half interesting but I found the last half very repetitive (may well be because all the girls suffered the same fate). I seem to recall seeing this on TV. Maybe it was Dateline. The book is about 300 pages. By 250 I was skipping pages big time. It am starting THE CUCKOO'S CALLING next, the prequel to THE SILKWORM. LM

Hi everyone. Yesterday I finished reading Commune of Women by Suzan Still. I can't recommend it at all

It started out with an interesting premise: six diverse women from different backgrounds are locked in a lunchroom at LAX airport after it was attacked by a bunch of terrorists. They are the most obnoxious group of women I've ever read about, plus, one of them was a 91 year-old "mountain woman," and whose dialogue was spoken with a heavy twang that I couldn't read or understand. You literally had to translate it as you read it. Not fun. The other women were just hateful, selfish, and rude, and their stories stunk. I was so disappointed because the book started out so well.

Now I'm reading A Stranger in the Kingdom by Howard Frank Mosher, and I'm really liking it. I hope I will continue to like it, as Commune of Women was such a disappointment.
