Light reading over the holiday week-end Ann Ross' ""Miss Julia's Marvelous Make-over"" and ""Blossom Street Brides"" by Debbie Macomber. Both very good.

I am reading ONE THOUSAND WHITE WOMEN by Jim Fergus. I remember it had some buzz awhile back. I hope I like it.

I just finished reading "Child of God" by Cormac McCarthy. Very, very disturbing read that will stay with me for awhile. This is the second book I've read by this author and it will be a long time before I pick up another.

I am about 125 pages into FIVE SMOOTH STONES by ANN FAIRBURN. I read this many years ago ... At least 25 ... And all I remember was that it was very good. Holds true to that impression so far. It is over 900 pages long. Here is the synopsis .... David Champlin is a black man born into poverty in Depression-era New Orleans who achieves great success and then sacrifices everything to lead his people in the difficult, day-by-day struggle of the civil rights movement. Sara Kent is the beloved and vital white girl who loved David from the moment she first saw him, but they struggle over David's belief that a marriage for them would not be right in the violent world he had to confront. First published in 1966, this epic has become one of the most loved American bestsellers.

Re: What Are You Reading --- April 2014

I found a set of books by Donna Ball at our library's book sale and enjoyed them a lot:

A Year on Ladybug Farm, At Home on Ladybug Farm, Love Letters from Ladybug Farm, Christmas on Ladybug Farm (novella), and Vintage Ladybug Farm. The books are about four widowed/divorced female friends (of a "certain age") who fall in love with an elderly house in the Shenandoah Valley and decide to move in together and renovate the house. (If you've ever lived in a "vintage" house, you'll appreciate what they run into.) It's light, fun, charming reading, and -- to me -- the characters are much more interesting and real than those in the "Ladies of Covington" books.

PS -- there is a "spin off" called Hummingbird House which features two minor characters from the Ladybug Farm series. The two were well done in the Ladybug Farm books but were just silly in their own book. Don't bother.

Lilysmom, I saw your post just as I posted mine. I second your recommendation, but I like her book That Man Cartwright, which is on my "all time favorites" list, even more. BTW, I believe her last name is spelled Fairbairn in case anyone searches by author.

HONEYBIT, so glad you picked up on the author's correct last name. Nothing more frustrating when trying to find a book. I am also delighted to hear your recommendation for THAT MAN CARTWRIGHT. I will be sure to check it out. LM

Hey, y'all! How's everyone doing? I've been out of the loop for a while--hope spring has sprung for all of you!

I'm currently about half-way through The Deepest Water by Kate Wilhelm. This is my first book by her, so if anyone else has read this author, I'd love to hear recommendations as I am enjoying it. This one is a murder mystery set in Oregon (my home state), so I am enjoying all the local references. I also have absolutely no clue who could possibly be the culprit and am enjoying trying to figure it out.
