Wells Fargo is the worst bank anywhere. I would not give them one penny to hold for me. I am speaking from my own experience. They cannot be trusted. If you have money in a bank with them, get it out!

I am all for Congressional investigations, FBI, SEC, and whatever other alphabets the Federal Government would like to throw at these executive scumbags, but really the only thing they recognize is the almighty dollar. If I were a Wells Fargo customer, I would immediately close out my account(s) and let them know why. A nationwide boycott of Wells Fargo should be organized by Jane and Joe Average also. That's what will scare the pants (and skirts) off these people; threaten their bottom line and you'll see changes.
Then bring on the prosecutions and double digit prison sentences.
Orange will indeed be the New Black for you guys!

As I understand it, cross-selling is not equal to stealing identities or pilfering funds from accounts. I have not read anywhere that the underlings at Wells Fargo were instructed to create bogus accounts. If anyone has specific references otherwise on this, I'd be happy to see them.
Someone I love worked in the mortgages department at WF before the crash in '08. His job was to find loopholes and round-about ways to acquire mortgages for folks who by all rights could never qualify. He worked under constant pressure to meet heavy quotas. I remember a conversation he and I once had about it, during which he told me, "I just cannot do it. I know these people cannot carry these huge mortgages."
I can certainly understand how the under-current could run through a department, one employee tipping off another how to meet his quota and get the boss off his back. I can also semi-imagine a mid-level manager turning a blind eye to it as long as his office's numbers were good, but I cannot imagine upper management giving directives for it.
Correct me (in a civilized manner) if I am wrong.

My Mother's estate has an irrevocable trust at Wells Fargo. It was set up years ago. Have already informed my Mom and her attorney that we will do whatever is needed to get that money from Wells Fargo upon her demise.
Throughout the years I have maintained that they have treated her badly, too long to go into. But I can assure you that I have had to accompany my Mom many times to WF to get her own money without a hassle of some nature.
At one point they blamed my deceased father! (My grandfather initially set up the trust.) My response, "Seriously? You're blaming the dead guy? Just stop and give my Mom HER money!" They did and do, but it's always something.

I worked for a very large national Bank & every associate was required to take Ethics Training. No pity for associates who knowingly steal from their employer.
They weren't stealing from their employer - the bank forced them to sign up a quota of new accounts, and looked the other way for YEARS.
The bank stole fees from their customers...it's not like the clerks made extra money by doing what they were forced to do.
The associates received incentive for those ill-gotten accounts....lots of inventive. Add in quarterly bonuses for 'meeting their goal'...and possibly promotions & annual raise for meeting said goals.....it all adds up to getting lots of $$$ from unethical practices.
@sidsmom so we all agree these practices are not a good thing right?
Correct.
It doesn't matter if it's a part-time teller making minimum wage or
a multi-million dollar salaried CEO.
Ethics are ethics.
Some upthread are implying the front-line associates should somehow be given a pass since their manager asked them to do something unethical.
Don't work that way.
I gotta be honest. This is incredible to me. We all (or most of us) want to be ethical. But if you need a job, and you need to pay the rent, and your boss is telling you that it's no problem to "bend the rules," I can understand that you might "bend the rules." I am going to assume, perhaps unfairly, that most of us on this board do not have to deal with this on a daily basis. But millions of Americans do deal with this on a daily basis. Why, oh why, do we not seem willing to require that the "higher ups" also be ethical? Why do we want to give them a pass? I do not get it. I never will.
Everyone needs to be held to the same standards. Wrong is wrong and even low level employees know that. It is called character. A persons character and integrity follow them all their life.

When I threatened to bring in an attorney they got slightly better. I am sorry to hear of your loss. The bank certainly doesn't make it any easier. Be viglilant! Bring someone with you to the bank and challenge them when they get icky. They make it soooo hard to be at all nice, so don't be!

My problem is Ms. Warren speaks out of both sides of her mouth though Wells Fargo needs a complete overhaul and has for quite some time........

It's a version of "using other people's money"
