You wanna have heart failure you should read what one has to eat on the Ketogenic diet! Almost 100 percent fat with just enough protein thrown in for life and a teeny tiny amount of carb. You have to drink whip cream with every meal or substitute something with an exact ratio of fat to carb like Macadamia nuts.

And use those ketostix and make sure they come up purple? My friend has a son with epilepsy and she had to adhere to that diet for him throughout his entire childhood. He is doing well now and whether it was from the diet, she said she hopes so because it was a rough ride for them....

Yup. Is he still on the diet? My dd was able to get off after four years. It will cure or nearly cure some epilepsies. But it is VERY difficult and yes you have to have those keto sticks turn dark. DD's were often black. THe school nurse about had a heart attack! It's hard for people to understand that ketones in the urine are good in this case!

The ketones are from ingesting the high concentrations of fat and almost no carb.

Is this like the PKU diet?

Is that the one for phenylketonurics?

No, this is a diet for epilepsy. It was used in a somewhat different form before the advent of drugs like dilantin and phenobarbital. But in the 90's Johns Hopkins hospital brought it back because a lot of kids were not helped by the drugs. You weigh the food on a gram scale with a predetermined ratio mathmatically arrived at according to height, weight, amount of calories they want you to have. On a 4 to 1 ratio that means 4 grams of fat to 1 gram of combined carb and protein. It is basically a diet to trick your body into thinking you are starving and then the body releases substances that stop seizures. Last I heard they still don't know exactly why it works but it does. It can be a miracle cure.

Yes, it is.

I'm so sorry about your daughter and Serenity's friend's child. I am glad that it has helped. It must have been so hard for you and her. When your child is ill, there is nothing more important than getting them well.

JHU is the one of the best!

Thank you Melania. Yes Johns-Hopkins is an amazing place. Do you remember the movie "Airplane"? Directed by Jim Abrahams? Well his son, Charlie was one of the first put back on the re-instated diet plan. Abrahams later made the movie "First Do No Harm" starring Meryl Streep. Now the Charlie Foundation is the leader on the diet etc. I am still fascinated with the whole process even though thankfully we no longer have to do it!

I didn't know that about Abraham's son. I am so glad it works and just think it's a diet...not all the drugs that have so many side effects.

It's great you no longer have to do it...did it stop the seizures for your DD?

Here are the ingredients on the Farmland Dairies FF half and half I use:

Fat Free Milk

Cream

Vit. A Palimate

Vit. D3

0mg Fat

0mg Sat fat

0mg Cholesterol

15mg Sodium

45mg Potassium

1mg Carbs

1mg Sugars

4% Calcium, Vit A 2%, Vit, D $%

i tried FF half and half -it was just like using skim milk - added nothing to the flavor of the coffee so instead I am drinking it black. At least black it is full flavored and rich tasting. I really miss my half and half though.

Yes. Like magic. It was like overnight. She still has to take one med but before no matter what meds she had she was in bad shape. Anyone who knows someone who has a child with intractible seizures should take a look at the keto diet.

That is amazing!! I'm so glad it worked and she is doing well. You must have felt relieved to a certain degree to have a solution thru diet.

How are people claiming to eat such a small amount of butter, margarine, oil, whatever. Don't you ever fry an egg, eat a piece of toast, eat a potato, roast a vegetable?

I use olive oil, sprays, and non-stick pans, VanSleepy, and very little butter or margarine, if at all.

Hi,

No fried eggs

Rarely eat toast

No butter on my potatoes, salt & pepper and sometimes gravy

I roast vegetables in olive oil

If I'm sauteing vegetables, seafood, or chicken, I use olive oil with a pat of butter.

Thanks. I use mostly olive oil also, but it seemed some were implying they hardly ever use ANY fat. That's what I was questioning. Maybe I misread lol

No thanks. I'll still be using as little butter, fats, margarine as I can, avoiding fat on the little meat that we do eat and continue eliminating processed foods when possible.

ITA! BUT, these clueless people can eat all the fat, greasy gunk until they pop. Have to keep the doctors in business. Have to keep the insulin makers in business. Have to keep the dialysis centers in business. So go ahead, eat away. You'll pay later. Guaranteed.

Lila Belle, I agree with you...

Sidsmom - what does eating good fats (in butter or olive/coconut oil) have to do with "keeping the insulin makers in business"?
