I also posted this in Kitchen but I think there is more traffic on this Forum:
Syracuse, N.Y. -- Wegmans is recalling about 1,125 pounds of chicken it produced without getting the meat inspected by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
The chicken items were produced Jan. 3.
The problem was discovered by a federal inspector during a review of Wegmans' records. The USDA said an inspector found Wegmans changed its production schedule and produced the chicken products outside the approved hours of operation.
Although there have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products, the USDA classified the action as a Class 1 recall, the most serious type of recall.
Here's how the USDA defines a Class 1 recall:
"This is a health hazard situation where there is a reasonable probability that the use of the product will cause serious, adverse health consequences or death."
The following products are subject to recall:
The products bear establishment number "EST. or P-7567" inside the USDA mark of inspection. These items were shipped to distribution and retail locations in Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Virginia.
Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them. These products should be returned to the place of purchase for a full refund.
Consumers with questions about the recall should call Wegmans Consumer Affairs Department at 1-(800)-934-6267, ext. 4760.

I heard about the recall today. These are products I buy all the time but since I was sick during the last few weeks, I haven't shopped at Wegman's. My husband has been stopping at supermarkets closer to home. Fortunately, the marinated chicken we found in our freezer was from months ago. Nevertheless, I have always trusted Wegman's quality control but now I am more in doubt. I'm not about to raise my own livestock but it's a wake-up call to follow up on recalls. I'm on an email list of dog food recalls. I wish I could do the same for humans. I'm going to check that out.

I actually don't unfortunately have a Wegman's in my area but I know a lot of people on these boards shop there and are very happy with them. I am sure they follow very strict rules and guidelines as they are known for their quality.
I would imagine what happened here was a hiccough that they are reacting to in a very proactive way in order to ensure they maintain their high level of quality.
To be honest, I was very surprised to see this on the news earlier today but it just goes to show you that these things can happen to the very best of companies. I'm sure Wegman's is totally on this and will make the necessary adjustments in order to make sure this doesn't happen again.
