Wedding reply/gift question

Well duh me! lol. We are invited to a wedding 4 states away. Well we wont be going. I must send the reply back this week. Its been so long since we were invited to a wedding we didnt attend, I forget! Do we send our gift @ the same time as the reply in a seperate card? OR do we send it the week when they get married or right after they are married? (We are sending a card with a check). I think we send it like the day or so after they are married. What is proper? Thanks!
