Weather Terms I Don't Remember....

hearing growing up in the 50s and early 60s. I just read the Northwest is under a heat dome. Never heard that until the last couple of years.

Also, polar vortex and wind chill.  It was just darn cold.

La Nina and El Nina, microburst, straight line winds, etc.

As a kid I remember basically they gave the temps, what the next day was going to be. The only exception I remember, and I was married then, was the coverage of Hurricane Agnes, I believe, when NE Pa had horrendous flooding.

Science has made great advances in discovering new weather phenomena resulting in new terms.  I notice that they're still evolving and adding new descriptions and names.  Wind chill has been around a long time though.

We in the Pacific NW area going through a massive heatwave. Supposed to be as high as 114-118 degrees tomorrow.  Unheard of for this area. Our normal summer weather is high 80's and some 90's. Rarely we will hit 100 but never more than that. We are breaking records all across the board here.

I have been thinking about your area. Hopefully people have the resources to ride this out safely.

this is just caraaaaazy!  I feel so bad for ya'll. I bet a lot of folks don't have AC. Here in Florida we don't ever get that hot.

I have you in my thoughts but wish I could send you a fan

Probably also because we only had "weathermen" on the news, not degreed meteorologists like we do today.

Well, I'm not sure a degreed meteorologist is doing a better job than the  weather man that just read the report.

Re: Weather Terms I Don't Remember....

We had "virga" and "dirt rain" last week.

Virga is a mass of rain streaks that look like they're hanging under a cloud and evaporate before they can reach the earth.
