~~ We Need New Luggage - Help ~~

We are taking a trip next spring. Our current luggage is sort of canvas w/ metal supports. A decent brand and not very old. On our last trip (part by rail) I swear the train ran over one of our bags because it totally bent the supports. I've been kind of watching the hard sided luggage. My dh went on line and did some research and it was basically recommended to only use soft sided luggage. Does anyone have any good/bad experiences either way? TIA
