Re: Wary of donating to charities.

@Allthingsgirly67   I understand what you are saying.  In our area the local animal shelter offered spay and neuter vouchers for those who were lower income so that they could alter their dogs.

There was only a limited number of vouchers to be given out.  The program was called "Spay Day".   Local veterinarians agreed to accept the vouchers for full payment on the surgeries.  This was all to promote reducing the number of unwanted puppies.  The veterinarians made nothing on these surgeries.

On the day the vouchers were given out many showed up in BMW's , Mercedes and other luxury cars.  One lady even showed up in a Ferrari.  There was no checking of income or any way to verify that these people needed these vouchers.  The volunteers who were working the program were so upset to see such blatant misuse of something that was not meant for the more well-to-do to get free surgeries for their pets.

Sadly the people who would have benefited from this program were turned away because the vouchers were limited and many of them were already taken by those who could well afford to pay.

I was working at one of the veterinary hospitals that participated in the event and a few of those people drove up in their luxury cars and laughed about how they were able to get their dogs altered at no cost.  In fact one couple took great joy in telling everyone in the waiting room how they had purposely delayed spaying their dog until they could get the free voucher so that they could save their money for the cruise to Europe that they had planned the following month.

The shelter tried to continue the program for a few years but due to the unfortunate handling of this fiasco many veterinarians declined to participate and the program was eventually ended.

It is very sad when something that is meant to help those in need is abused by those who see it as a free handout.

Why on earth would someone driving a Ferrari be given a voucher for a free spay and neuter?

This makes no sense to me whatsoever.

This was a very poorly run, poorly managed event.

Turn these people in Ferraris away.

@Allthingsgirly67

You are right, I do NOT understand your point.

You said:

I don’t understand why they just don’t sell their cars to have less expensive cars or a used car with no payments.

It is quite possible that car is already paid for....why would they get rid of it in that case?

Gas costs the same whether in a Toyota or a BMV.

You have no way of knowing whether they have car payments either....and as others have stated....you do Not know their circumstances.

I'd worry about caring for myself and my children and let others do the same.

Sometimes wealthy people volunteer, but I know what you mean. I always judge women by their finger nails, if they have a manicure I wonder where they got the money.

Hubbs says none of those people own their car. There is a lot of debt.

Seriously?  You judge by a manicure?  How crazy!!!

Nail polish is dirt cheap at Walmart and you can paint your own nails just as easily.

What a silly way to judge a woman for goodness sake!!!!

If she has nice nails, she isn't in need somehow?  It is none of your business where she got the money.....

Good grief!

Just GIVE to the best of your ability and pray that those in need are benefiting and stop judging!

I'm talking about professional manicures, not a bottle of nail color from "The Buck Stops Here" Store. I think it is easy to tell the difference.

I agree with both of you.  If the good intention isn't there and people are suspicious of how a charity distributes donations then people shouldn't donate to that charity.

Re: Wary of donating to charities.

I do not believe if a woman pays for a manicure means she is a woman of means.  That may be her one and only luxury for herself.  I do not do it because I am cheaper than dirt and that includes even buying nail polish at the drug store.  It is just not my thing.

As far as charities go for decades now I send a check every month to two local charities in my city to help feed and clothe families. With extra sent in November and December to the charities for the holidays. This way I feel like the money will be put where it is needed most, locally.

I do not give to anyone on the street with a sign or when a woman approached me while filling up my car asking for money.  I told her no.

I do think people in need should be protected from thieves and crooks and scammers who STEAL resources from them.

Why shouldn't an effort be made rather than just letting every crook on the corner take food from the needy to buy drugs with their cash?

I guess what I’m trying to say is that sometimes we need to make sacrifices. Actually that is exactly what I’m saying.
