Everyday there are shoplifters caught at the store. I go to the police department site and check out who was arrested. I can't the believe how dumb or desperate people are. Some people are caught with a cart load of stolen goods.
Their security department sure gets a workout. I am sure the shop lifting problems inflate prices for all of us.
Wow, I am surprised they have a 90 day return policy. If you hung on to clothing for 3 months before you returned it, it would be out of season and could not be put back on the rack, and they would lose money on it.
Most retailers, including Amazon, have a 30 day or less return policy.
Your observations at correct, @Carmie . Walmart not only ATTRACTS crime, all types of crime, to a community but it's so pervasive, the police can't keep up with it. There's so many police calls from Walmart that they don't even respond unless someone is injured. That's verbatim from my local police department.
If you ever get mugged in broad daylight at a Walmart parking lot, I doubt you'll ever shop there again. Happens every minute. The police do not resond to the muggings either, unless you're injured, too many they say. They won't investigate either. You have to visit the police department if you want to make a report.
Yes, Walmart is great for crime and all sorts of other bad stuff. Has anyone ever seen security in their Walmart parking lot? They're not going to pay for that. Not even at night.
Yes, it's about less registers, more profit and less service. But it's much more than that.
@WindingRoad Sorry, but you're statement is not true of every Walmart. I see security patrolling Walmart parking lots in their SUV's all hours of the day and night. Our Walmart even has police cars patrolling the parking lot. I love Walmart and shop there weekly either in the store or on the website. Oh and I love self check-outs and look for those first. I use them at Walmart, Target and the grocery store.
Most definitely it's not true of all Walmarts. It's clearly a sweeping generalization that has not been my experience at all in any of the Walmarts that I go to routinely. I've been there at all hours of the day and night, and I feel completely safe. There's security in the stores but they never seem to have much to do. Crime is most certainly not rampant by any stretch of the imagination.
Muggings happening "every minute", police not responding because they can't keep up with the crime there, etc, may very well be true somewhere, but it's over-the-top to suggest that all of this is a widespread Walmart problem.

But at Walmart there are always long lines, and only one or two manned cashiers and long lines at self check...and it never fails at self check---something wont scan and waiting for someone to help takes a long time....At Target lots of manned cashiers but long lines at both manned and self check...the Target does a booming business...
@Spurt my friend, I couldn't agree more. When I first moved here, even though it wasn't a huge move geographically it still took me a bit to get the lay of the land. The first place I found was a huge WM which I didn't have by my previous address. I was so pleased when I first started shopping there and couldn't understand the criticism I had heard. Fast forward a couple of months . . . oh now I get it. Whether you were in self serve (a disaster) or getting in line (better bring your own chair) I quickly located the Target's around here and now all is well. Lots of check out options and always pleasant people around to assist if you need help.
ITA....I can just be browsing at Target and an employee that's passing by greets me and asks if they can help me find something, I thank them and say I'm just browsing, nice pleasant employees at the register too.....Sharp contrast to Walmart where I've encountered rude employees, they even argue amongst themselves... WalMart is always last resort for me
I go to Walmart reluctantly for cat food, garden supplies etc. The behavior of the employees makes my hair stand on end. Lowest level people I have ever witnessed, on the whole.
Last weekend I was there and got the surprise of the week. A friendly, well spoken young man came up to me and asked if he could help me find anything. He was dressed in all black and had a walk-in talkie and a Walmart badge, or I would have thought he was trying to pick me up. Just kidding, but it surprised the heck out of me. I hope this is a new thing that will continue.

I always wished Walmart had security guards and employees walking around the store like Target does. Target spends the money on them to deter shoplifting and that in turn keeps the store and the customers safe.
Walmart historically refused to be proactive in this area, saving millions and millions in salaries over all these years. They dumped that responsibility and cost on local police agencies.
Customers pay for this, not on their Walmart receipt, but in higher taxes. If you don't share my opinion, that's fine, the facts don't lie, you can google this subject.

Retail stores have workers greet customers for security reasons. They do this to let the customers know that they have been seen; it is one of the ways they use to try to deter theft.
The workers are to greet customers throughout the store, not just at the entrance.
Greet, smile, ask if they need help-all to deter theft.
People who are there to shoplift do not like to be seen; they prefer to have no contact with workers and want to feel they have not been seen.
It really has nothing to do with how nice a store is.

Think it is a combination of both customer service and security. Honest customers appreciate the attention while shoplifters do not. Uniformed security will be avoided by shoplifters and will do little to prevent crime. A regular employee on the floor paying attention to the customer is much more effective. Cannot imagine any customer being comfortable shopping with uniformed officers walking around watching them.
