If this happens nationwide, I'm done with WM. My local store was revamped over a year ago and they added a HUGE self-checkout area. They left about 6 lanes open for their employees to check you out but when I go (early in the morning), there are only 2 lanes open and one of those is the former 12 items or less lane which doesn't have a conveyor belt and there is very limited space to set your things down and for the cashier to bag them up. I'm putting bagged groceries in my cart while still unloading the rest of my items onto the countertop. I need to remember which lane that is. When I'm there, I'm in such a hurry to get out that I'm forgetting about that lane that is a pain.
I think I'll find a web-site with an e-mail address for the general manager and voice my complaint about the self check outs and the one lane being extremely limited on space.

It's starting in my area. One has completely gone self checkout and the store I use most often has gone down to all self checkouts except for two lanes, even on a busy Saturday. This store has been 80% self checkout for several years, and I think the pandemic has hastened this conversion in my town to all self checkout (or at least verified it's profitable). While there seems to be plentry of staff fulfilling online orders, one worker told me most are part timers and because cashiers make more money, Walmart saves on benefits and salaries. I don't doubt it.

If retail stores want me to check myself out, then they can pay me the same they would pay a real, live checker (which is a pittance). Or give me a discount on my groceries. Seems to me, these stores don't want to pay a checker - they expect their customers to do the work for free.

We have three Walmart Supercenters and three Walmart Grocery stores in my city. Only one of the "grocery" stores has gone to all self checkout. The other Walmart's have no plans to do so according to what I have been told by the local staff.

When the super rich Walmart pays their cashiers a living wage, there will be self check outs. The company does this because they are cheap and do not want to invest in a live employee. Get used to it as they will continue to have self checkouts as they are not willing to pay their cashiers a LIVING WAGE. So seriously would you work in that chaos for such little pay? WalMart can afford to pay them more. JMO

There's one certainty about any change.... It'll be resisted.
@Kachina624 Like you, I haven't been in a Walmart in a very long time but have picked up groceries. I can almost bet I will never darken the door of one again. I don't have to now.

My local Walmart drastically reduced the number of live checkouts. Even on the weekends, there may be just three lanes open and everything else is self-checkout. I think it's ridiculous, especially when nearly every shopper in there has a full cart. Self-checkouts should really only be for those that have just a few items. I do use self-checkout when I don't have a lot, and I prefer a live cashier when I have a full cart.
Walmart would prefer we use self-checkouts or order online and get it delivered than to pay employees a decent wage. I try to avoid the place as much as possible, mostly because of the long wait times to get checked out. It's not that bad on weekday mornings or afternoons, but weekends and evenings, it's Grand Central Station.

With those that already have gone that way it's a way to appease customers who will not wear masks even if not vaccinated and also eliminate face to face contact with customers so workers who want to be protected at work from Covid won't complain since it's not over yet!!! Also it will save WM money on employee salaries and what little benefits they might get!! I haven't been to a Walmart for many years and certainly won't ever go if they do that!!! Funny that many who do not want to wear masks or be vaccinated want their freedom and would find it intrusive to have to show proof of vaccination but would be ok with having their photos or images taken at self checkouts!

This past Friday in the one close to my home that is nothing but self checkout I noticed 4 Walmart employees propped up on open check out booths waiting to see if their assistance was needed. Walmart is paying all those ladies while they fiddle with their phones. I did have to ask one for help since Blue Bell ice cream would not scan due to the cold temp. of it.

Wow i havent heard anything about Walmarts possibly going to all self check outs in stores. I do use
the self check sometimes but would really hate it if I had a cart full of stuff!! Our store has only one checkout open when I am there but prob more later in the day.
