I don't shop Walmart as often as I used to.  When I do go, there are only 1 or 2 cashiers and the self checkout line is very long.  The self checkout has doubled in size.  I didn't do self checkout the last time I was.  I have to say the cashier was as slow as a snail.  Very nice, but very slow.  People switched to the other lane but I already had my stuff on the belt.

Re: Walmart checkouts

[ Edited ]

I started using the self checks a few years ago..... to avoid the Target Red Card sales pitch from their cashiers. I now use them 99% of the time.

How dare they take away jobs from all the checkers they used to employ. I think it's quite a shame that such a large retain store treat their employees like this. Did they keep all of these employees and move them to other areas of their stores? I don't really know but I do hope so. We were never really Walmart regulars but I know many people are. The store we would go to is HUGE and had MANY checkout lanes with employees working them.

If Corporate Walmart thinks this is the right way to treat their employees, I do not need to shop at a place like this.

@PINKdogWOOD Lots of people in rural areas don't really have a choice not to shop at Walmart.

A woman who works at my Walmart's curbside pickup is finishing her last quarter of an online Purdue University bachelor's degree in business administration, paid 100% by W. When I asked if she was planning on staying with W, she rolled her eyes but said it's complicated.

I honestly prefer self checkouts.  I hated going through lines with checkers who asked questions about how I was doing or were super slow, or worst of all the ones who would stop while checking to look at something I was buying and say things "wow I love this, where did you find this" or "I use this all the time too" etc.

Maybe I'm in the minority though.

I like the self checkout also unless I have a ton of products.  However, when using a cashier, I don't mind interacting with the cashier like you do.  Nothing wrong with friendly conversation.  Why would it bother you if the cashier asks how you are doing @pinkcrystal ?

I don't mind if they ask questions like "did you find everything you need?" but sometimes you get ones that just feel the need to converse with you the whole time and I just feel awkward I guess.  I am shy by nature so that could be why.

I'm with you totally on this @pinkcrystal.  I don't mind a little friendly chatter but feel awkward when some cashiers get too nosy & chatty about what you buy. Ex--I was checking out at WM awhile back and when cashier scanned my small plunger (got it for a sink clog), she commented  "Oh, you've got a plugged-up toilet do you?"  Ugh! I can do without those comments! LOL

@CalminHeart    Just wait until you have to go to the shipping dock and unload the truck with your merchandise.

I don't think our local Super Center has anything but self checkout and I hear this is nation-wide.  I haven't been in the store for over 3 years, as I use grocery pick-up.

Walmart pays their employees very low wages, and they are known for very poor labor practices.

@Greeneyedlady21    Wal-Mart pays employees commiserate with their skills and experience.  They employ thousands who have little of either and who otherwise would have no job opportunities.

Can you cite an example of a poor labor practice?  Their employees are happy enough that the company has survived for years without unionization.

I heard straight from more than one employees' mouths that no one has lost jobs. They have relocated them to do the personal shopping for online pick up orders. They are called pickers. I buy a ton of groceries each week. Last week's haul was close to $200. I did it all online, and an employee brought it out to my car and loaded it into the vehicle. I have used their online pick up service since Covid, and I will never go back to shopping in a store for the majority of my groceries. I do occasionally buy some produce and most of our meat at a couple of locally owned stores, but those are small purchases that aren't difficult to check out myself or carry.

@Ainhisg    I had a chat with our local store manager and he told me they had not laid off a single cashier and were, in fact, trying to hire more people.

My ex worked from home a lot, and he was in finance and had nothing to do with HR but I heard a lot of calls when the focus was employee retention. Countless surveys  are sent out regarding employee retention and they also had a significant focus on helping the community. My ex was expected to do community service. The Waltons spend millions each year supporting all of the communities in Northwest Arkansas.

i cannot stand shopping there but we have to use WM. The alternative is Stop&Shop, overpriced, and they have 2 cashiers and the rest is self-check. Or drive 30 mi round trip where another $$$ store has all cashiers.

There are 3 or 4 WM cashiers out of a dozen lanes and they are being slower than molasses now. Before it's scanned they pick up and look at each item like they never saw a box of Cheerios or a bag of Apples before in their life!!!

I have sensory issues. i easily get rattled at the self-check, there's always a problem with produce or a weighted item and the attendant has to futz with the screen.   WM has a tablet screen size camera on you while the transaction is scanning and i wonder if they store the register data as well as your  mug shot.
