Self checkout isn't going anywhere.
The brand new Astor Place Wegmans has rows of 40+ self checkout stations....no cash.
No jobs were taken away from anyone at this location, which created about 600 hundred new jobs.
They are fast, efficient, seamless.
There are only 5 or 6 staffed registers (at most) which take cash: in New York City food establishments must take cash.

Retail stores all over are trying to deal with theft. Our local big supermarket chain has told the employees to not go after. A major department store in Philadelphia just had a fatality due to this, very sad.

I don't think Walmart is going to get rid of self checkout. The two stores I ususally go to just put in, a lot, of new self checkouts. And I don't think they have enough employees to man the regular registers.

I use the self checkout in Stop & Shop, Walmart and CVS..... it's much faster.

I held off doing self check-out for a long time. But now that I'm used to them, I prefer them! Most of the time there is no waiting for a check-out. Occasionally, even the self check-outs are all full, but usually the time is way less than standing in the lines for the actual cashers. I also prefer self check-out because I can bag things the way I want them. Also, I know that I am checking my things out accurately. I have found on occasion where I have been double charged for things, etc. I think if these stores do away with self check-outs, that is a shame because then the honest people are once again being punished for the thiefs and dishonest people. This is getting really, really old!!!!

I like Costco self checkout if I only have a couple of items but a couple of weeks ago there was a woman with a basket piled high with what seemed like ever clothing item they sell. She insisted on using self checkout but I think they made her go to a regular cashier. This woman must have bought several of every clothing item they had plus other stuff, her cart was overflowing.

Seems the reason is rampant theft.
Whatever the reason, I am glad to have the checkers back.
I hope so. The Walmart nearest me just took out all the checker checkouts. I won't shop in the store.
I just order online. That keeps a shopper, checker, and delivery person in jobs.

A local store in my area s doing the same thing. The manager said he could use the manpower they hired for this to do other things!

I wonder if people will ever get tired of it in this country and make it really hard on the thieves not the honest hard working people?

@minkbunny "Rampant theft" - nailed it and on the flip side kind of humorous for those who actually thought this would be a good idea.
Many people just sit and think about how to scheme others out of a good buy albeit groceries, fashions, tools, anything. What a great idea, take away the human touch of checking us out when we buy goods and give it to the people to check themselves out in the check-out lines.
Honestly, this is easy to do especially when there are 10, 15, 20 self-serve lines and only one rover to watch over them all.
