@beach-mom  sure hope your son makes it back ok.  I am sure he will be relieved when he gets there.  And mom will be relieved too!

@shoesnbags, hoping all is well in that you have not had too much damage & the generator is working.  I know there are major problems in the area with communication and that can be frustrating for sure.  Keeping everyone in thoughts and prayer!

Re: Waiting for Ida

Another update.  Maryland is in an "enhanced" risk of a of severe weather for Wednesday.. This is extremely rare for our state.   Strong storms and tornadoes. I've never seen or been through a tornado.

@beach-momI appologize if my words seemed flippant.  You stated you were driving to an airport north ( not sure where you are at. ) Boston has a large airport.  The area is expecting about 4 inches of rain between wed.night and thursday. If DS flight was going to boston I just thought I'd give you a heads you might want a place to overnight  reserved before you got there.  May yoou and yours ramain safe in your travel.

I'm sure @shoesnbags is busy with things way more important than posting in this forum. I just hope she gets to a place where she has time and opportunity and resources and nothing more pressing to do than update us on how it went. I've been thinking good thoughts about her and her family and hope they are well.

Re: Waiting for Ida

[ Edited ]

Ida has changed.  And for the better. I woke up this morning to thunder. Weird almost orange looking lightning.  Some rain now, but not heavy.  It's been down graded somewhat.  Radar still shows strong circulation, but there will by gusty winds building up later today,  evening and tonight.  Ida is now a post cyclone.  No longer a tropical storm.  We might get through this unscathed.  This is a model.  So it things are better here.

From national Weather Service.  "Ida is a Post Tropical Cyclone. It is no longer a hurricane or tropical storm. The core Low we refer to as the remnant Low or Ghost of Ida is now entering Tennessee. Tracking this is complicated by a stalled frontal boundary in our region."  Tornado watch is in effect till 8:00AM.  To the north of the storm will be more rain.  To the south of it, more chance of Tornadoes.  It's also spread westward a bit.  Pittsburgh is getting it now.  I didn't think so before.  Rain here is about 1".  The storms and tornadoes will be intermittent.  So we are going to get a lot of rain.  But so far, no wind.  Occasional lightning.  But it looks more normal. After 2:00PM, things change.  Elevated risk for tornadoes, less rain.  More wind.

@candys mine - I didn't take them that way at all! Please don't even think about it.

It is confusing. My children's lives have  recently  been impacted by hurricanes.

DD and I were supposed to drive to Boston August 21 from the PA/Delaware area for the wedding of one of her closest friends.  DD was in the wedding, which was Sunday afternoon. Hurricane Henri decided to take a trip up there too. At the start of the weekend they weren't sure where it would go. DD is the only bridesmaid who lived here - the rest are up there. (You can see from my thread here about this how hard it was not to go.)

DS lives in New Orleans. I posted about this too. He went through the middle of Hurricane Ida. His hotel didn't seem to have any damage, but it did. The roof caved in on the top floors, and there is a lot of water damage.

Thanks to an angel on earth, who was staying at the hotel too, he found a way out. They drove to Pensacola, since the airport was closed, and he was able to get flights home. All he wanted was a hot shower and sleep. All of his NOLA friends are out of the city, but being DS he is concerned about those who can't evacuate and he wants to help. I'm so glad he's home and safe!

And our prayers are with the people still there, with no power or safe drinking water. We all have problems and complaints, but something like this makes you count the blessings you do have.  Smiley Happy

Re: Waiting for Ida

[ Edited ]

Our first tornado was reported a little while ago.  Closer to an eastern county then us. Rain is just on and off.  Guessing, but I think we got about 2" of rain so far.  Our basement is OK, but it's a little damp in the corner it always gets a little damp. Our sump pump is working and we still have power.  Still very little wind.  We're in a heavy band of rain now, but it looks a little clearer after that.  I'm hoping this is the worst of it.  Our tornado watch goes up at 7:00PM with flooding going up at 8:00PM. It's actually cool right now.  Haven't used the air conditioner all day. Our street looks OK.  No standing water.  If it stays cool, it'll be OK for any tornado threat.  They usually pop up during hotter parts of the day.  The lightning seems to have died down too.  It was very noisy earlier with a heavy storm. The tornado was reported in Annapolis.  I just saw the footage of it.  Big one!  A lot of flooding down there.

Just showing the damage of the tornado.  Looks like some stores were heavily damaged.  I can't tell if any homes were damaged. Some poles and power lines are down along with a bunch of trees.  Most of builidngs are still standing, but some of them look torn in half.  A lot of blown out windows and doors. The power must be off.  Everything is dark.

@songbird   thinking of you.  I’ve never been through it either in PA.  No fires, hurricanes, earthquakes, and a rare tornado here.  I remember one tornado.  Ok that we have 4 seasons, and usually no major weather impacts.  Keep safe.  Praying for all who have been affected.  Mostly rain here, maybe 4 inches.

@beach-mom  glad your son is home safe.  What a worry.  You’ve had a few rough weeks of weather impacts.

Hoping @shoesnbags is safe.

@lynnie61 - So true! Thank you for saying this! We had severe storms and tornado warnings today too. Now there is flooding. DS just couldn't believe it, saying, "Are you kidding me? I'm going to go live in Idaho!" He's joking of course!

Ida just won't leave. We are used to getting remnants of hurricanes and tropical storms, but that usually just means a lot of heavy rain. She has done enough damage, and she needs to go out to sea.

Someone told me this is the fifth strongest hurricane ever in the U.S.

@shoesnbags - Are you all doing OK? I'm so glad you have a generator.
