Last year was pretty bad in a lot of ways and so far, 2023 is off to a bad start.
On top of all my health and family problems, the other day I was using my curling iron on my slowly-growing-out hair and I BURNED MY HAIR OFF!!!!
There's nothing worse than the smell of burned hair and it took hours--days--for the stench to dissapate. And it took a while for me to comb out the burned hair. This is the bad haircut I insisted on in November and I've been watching it gradually grow out. OMG, what's next?

I can't see into the future but obviously your curling iron tragedy wasn't due to a string of bad luck or fate. I can't even guess how you would let something like that happen but what's done is done. Go to your hairdresser for a trim and maybe wear a wig until your hair grows out to where you want it to be.

Something is not right about that. Curling irons should not get hot enough to burn your hair off. Throw it away.
How long did you hold your hair in the iron? You're only supposed to hold it for a few seconds.
Also, what kind of product did you have on your hair? Often times, a curling will scorch the product and stain the hair, but to actually burn your hair off?

I got distracted and wasn't paying attention. I did toss the curling iron; the smell was so bad I couldn't tolerate it.

Maybe you have your answer to WHY ME-- You get distracted and let things happen that should not occur.
Live in the present and focus. Plan for the future and organize. Be aware of details.
Try to have a positive mindset.
Sometimes if you look for bad things, they will seem to happen more.
Best wishes for a better new year.

That's it??? An incident like that is not that big of a deal; at least it's not a health and family problem. Was this a NEW curling iron that you were not use to using? Did you just set the temp too high?

Sorry that happend to you @GoneButNotForgotten
Keep thinking positive. Maybe this was a sign to let your hair be natural. Wash, blow dry if needed, and be done with it. Carry on confidently with hope in your heart!

rms1954: no, that's NOT all of it.
I just don't want to bore everyone with the long story of the medical and health problems that have plagued my family for about the last 5 years. But it you're interested, I'll give you all the awful details.

Big Joanie--I really feel for you. Once health problems start occuring it seems like there's no end to them, especially as you get older.
PS: Seeing your name made me smile--it reminds me of an insurance commercial in which a couple just bought a house and they have a problem with "aunts" showing up. Very funny.
