Is it possible that the abscess was caused by the microchipping and that it resulted in the chip coming out?

Nope. When it puffed up and I took her to the vet, she took the clippers to shave the fur around the abscess and about a shot glass full of pus oozed out. She said it was the worst she had ever seen. When it was cleaned up, you could see two telltale "fang" marks, caused by a kitty bite. She was housed with about 50 cats in a cage free area, so she was attacked before we picked her up. The vet said it takes about 10-14 days for an abscess to show up like that and this appeared five days after we got her. {#emotions_dlg.crying}

That's not good. They must be overwhelmed and understaffed. Who knows what would have happened to her if you hadn't rescued her.

All of them had already had their shots from a vet in my town. She volunteered her services because most of the people will use her as their vet. Is this rescue group even licensed? The sound shady to me.
Things have changed in rescue, mostly thanks to the Internet. There is no licensing agency for such groups. The adoption fee, which can be as high as $300, covers things like shots, neutering, dental (cleaning), grooming as they're usually a mess, microchip, heart worm test and preventative. I don't know of any vet that volunteers his services. A dental can cost up to $600+. We've also had surgery done by orthopedic specialists and ophthalmologists. We lose money on every dog. Our foster parents donate the food they feed and we drive miles and miles (wide open spaces) at our own expense. Every potential adopter has a home and reference check. We try to screen people IN instead of OUT. This is a breed rescue and everyone is a volunteer although several people work at it almost full time.

Re: Viewpoints needed: A rescue tale

Absolutely report it. My guess is that it is a mistake. My daughter has been heavily involved in a dog rescue organization for over 12 years. The amount of hours she donates each week is astounding. The volunteers work so hard to make certain everything is correct before releasing a dog. they must be chipped, spayed/neutered, heartworm free and in good health. They do keep records of each dog, but occasionally a mistake happens. That is probably what happened to you so do let them know praises to you for adopting and not going to a breeder. BTW, Lola, I love how you are always able to look something up for someone and then post a picture of it!

Awww gee...I LOVE your little Aubry, lolakimono!

I hope you get everything straightened out on the chipping. You are wonderful to have rescued your two kitties, and they are lucky to have you as their Forever Parent!

Yes, you should contact the rescue place and report it. They charged you for it, right? They need to microchip your kitty to make it right.

They could be understaffed, yes. But when a pet is microchipped, they usually scan it and check it right away to make sure it "took."

I took a rescued Sheltie to the vet for microchipping yesterday and watched the vet check it afterwards. Sometimes the chips "migrate" so they check the whole back and neck area.

Very true! Our vet had used two different scanners to check the entire neck-to-back area before microchipping our lab. And we did receive paperwork at the time of the chipping. I had forgotten about that...we sent in the paperwork ourselves for all of our cats and dogs.

Re: Viewpoints needed: A rescue tale

Ktlynam,

I'm not sure what they call his kind, but when I looked up orange cat images for my friend on Google, there were lots of pictures of kitties just like him in some incriminating poses. {#emotions_dlg.devil2}

He has a big white belly that he likes to show off. {#emotions_dlg.wub}

He has two speeds: slug and CRAZY! {#emotions_dlg.scared} {#emotions_dlg.w00t}

He turned 1 in April, but he's pure kitten at heart. Right now he's napping at my feet, but he was a little devilish this morning.

I taught him to fetch, and he fetches all day long. He loves to run after puff balls, springs, and plastic jacks. He's pretty good about dropping it right at my feet- more dog than cat.
