I want to share it with all of you in hopes that it can save someone else. In this day and age of the internet, information overload etc...things can get out of hand.
As some of you know my Siberian Husky was hospitalized in January with a dangerous group of cluster seizures. New meds were added and he was taken to the Vet 3 weeks later to get levels taken. He was having problems adjusting to the meds, but common for AEDs and it had not been a month yet. His liver enzymes had gone through the roof and my Vet insisted I put him on milk thistle and sam-e even though we had tried those before and they did not agree with him.
Always follow your heart and your gut in these things...I stupidly added the milk thistle and sam-e and almost killed my dog. The Vet insisted they were safe and the problems my dog had before had to be unrelated. I went to folks on the internet for opinions and was told the same by everyone..."oh those things are completely benign, no way could they cause an IBD flare...etc.) While I know my Vet and the opinions of people on the internet were well intentioned...they do not know my dog, like I know my dog.
Thirty six hours after adding the meds he started having explosive runs...he was still acting fine and wanted dinner so I added some rice to bind him up. He then began vomiting - this dog hardly ever vomits. By 9:00 pm I knew he was really sick but have been through IBD flares with him before and had hope that I could pull him through. He fought coming inside - it was very cold out...he just wanted to die out there. My son carried all 90 lbs of him in the house, he laid on his blanked for a while and seemed calm. I let him outside again before bed and was able to get him back in the house, I decided we would camp out in the family room. Just as we were going to bed he got up and paced to the door I told him to go lay down, I wasn't about to fight with him to get him in the house again. Then I looked and blood was pouring from his hind end - pure frank blood. He had a massive IBD bleed...in the time it took to drive to animal emergency he was in shock and critical condition - they did not think they could save him.
Thankfully he is still with us, but not back on food much yet (although previous IBD flares have lasted up to 3 months) he has never had a bleed before. I feel so responsible, I should have listened to my heart - listening to the well intentioned people nearly cost me my boy, he is my heart and soul.
Trust your gut instincts, you know your fur kids better than any Vet or stranger on the internet.
