@nana59  Your granddaughter is very lucky to have you as a gammy.  I'll bet those who created this heinous act aren't so lucky to have loving family relations.  You can be at peace by focusing on your love for your granddaughter and her caring friends.  The universe has a way of righting all actions and I'll bet, in time, those who were so callous will regret their decision.  But you don't need to spend your energy in that direction.  I have so much respect for your ability to love and care so much for your beautiful granddaughter.

I'm sorry @nana59. You must be awfully proud of your granddaughter. She sounds like a class act.

Please tell your wonderful granddaughter that there is NOTHING that can defeat the beautiful spirit that these young women have exhibited in memory of their friend.

Whether their memorial is defaced again or not, it will always be a symbol of their devotion to a comrade who is no longer physically with them, but is most certainly with them in Spirit.

One of the most common themes in literature is 'man's inhumanity to man'. I don't understand vandalism either; it costs taxpayers so much money to repair.

Believe it or not, this happened locally a few years ago. Anyone from Rochester NY area remember this?  The rock was along Route 390 south of Rochester.  It was a painted tribute to a soldier who had been killed.

It was defaced, and some local college students confessed after it was reported on the news.  They were ashamed of themselves and had done it while drunk, and tried to make it right by repainting it.

Sad we live in a world where people can't respect things anymore.

So sad. Reminds me of when rotten people vandalize a cemetery.

When the bad people are caught they should do all the clean-up and repair with

all of their money.

@nana59: My daughter’s fiancée died of cancer at 25. A few of my friends brought over a tree and we all planted it. It is a Rose of Sharon tree and now is quite tall. I often think of him and enjoy watching the birds nest in the tree. Perhaps your granddaughter might consider planting one for her friend too.

Last summer, this county saw a lot of revitalization efforts to local ugly spots and eyesores.   One hot Saturday, a volunteer crew spent more than 8 hours painting over graffiti in one very remote hangout spot.

That very night, a group of recent high school graduates vandalized that area, and destroyed all the hard work of those volunteers.   Little did they know their senseless act was caught on a litter control camera!

All of those kids were identified, mandated to appear at a certain time and place where they got to watch themselves in action, then scrape and repaint what they vandalized, plus do other hours of community service.    It was Karma at its best!
