Did the author of this thread ever come back to comment?

I think she should be more worried about the mega-wealthy and whether they pay their fair share of taxes without the loopholes, write-offs, tax breaks, etc., rather than worrying about free lunches. The majority of those parents are essentially paying for that lunch through their property taxes on their "new homes" as Burnsite mentioned.

Over the years I've been here, we've had several amorphous threads started about people cheating the system.

Remember the one about a supposed welfare mother buying her little girl a birthday cake with food stamps? 

We never know for sure whether any of these things happened,  We do know there are people who will cheat any and every system.  We do what we can to prevent it, but imo the answer is not to punish those truly in need.

Certainly the answer is not to deprive a child of lunch because his mother was seen wearing decent clothes, nor is the right thing to do to gossip about the family.  Dad could have lost his job and the mortgage is due.

I don't remember that thread. I have no problem with buying birthday cake with food stamps. You can buy anything with them, other than non-foods (alcohol etc.) and hot deli items. I am glad that the child got something, because the child may not even have received presents that day.

I know this is OT a little bit but on the same topic, if that makes sense but I have a friend- she and her husband do pretty darn well- well when their church would offer free food to those that need it, she always went & got some.  I walked on eggshells when I asked why and she said, "Why not, it's free."  It takes all kinds and I don't question anything anymore.

To those children that get free breakfasts, I'm glad they do and can start their days off with a full tummy.

It was a few years ago and went on and on for days, a really long discussion.  Some of us were shocked that others thought food stamps should not be used to buy a cake that said Happy Birthday to the little girl.  Pretty sure this supposedly happened at WalMart.

Sadly very true.  It costs money and social work is often the program that is cut.

You are so right!  Often what happens is their caseloads just get bigger and bigger until no one person could possibly handle them all.  The system collapses and kids who need protection fall between the cracks.

Then someone starts to complain and blame the social workers, but just try to raise taxes to get proper workers in there and we see that those children in need are NOT the priority.
