Re: Venting About Reduced Lunch in School Program

[ Edited ]

Children's health and well being should be a top domestic priority in the US. School lunches and breakfasts are key to giving them a good foundation for their future health, their current learning and their future earning.

Their wellbeing is much more important than disciplining any perceived (and not proved) misdemeanors of their parents.

They will not be little for long and nutrition is crucial.

The parents do pay sales taxes and even if they are renters, they are through their rent providing the landlord with the funding to pay his own property taxes, which in most communities are funding school programs.

Abusing the system isn't an urban legend or myth. It happens.  Why does this fact evoke such anger in some? It is what it is. Thieves frauds, takers, abusers exist in on all levels - from Wall Street to Tobacco Road. Face it.

Audits of SNAP and WIC show  one of the lowest percentages of fraud & abuse of any gvt. programs.

i dont think anyone here said that abuse DOESNT happen or CANNOT happen in our system. i believe the vast majority of us realize  that abuse/misuse does happen. i believe the vast majority also realizes that there is no way to get rid of the abuse 100%. going all the way back to the original post, what i am concerned about is people judging other people and not knowing the entire story of just who they are judging and what goes on in their lives. maybe those that like to judge should be working in the system to do the investigations and NOT be a bystander on the street or in an office making a guess......

Well stated, as usual, Burnsite.   Let the children have the benefit of a good start.  We all pay taxes one way or another as you stated; to deny a child a bit of breakfast each morning or a free/reduced lunch sadly says much about where our society places priorities.

And we all know about privacy issues as mentioned earlier; that isn't the point of this thread.

@Cakers3 @Burnsite

IMO both your posts are worth repeating.

Re: Venting About Reduced Lunch in School Program

A lot of valid points here.

I was a single parent for many years I qualified for the lunch program I didn't sign up for it because what passes for "nutrition" is a joke. So I sacrificed and packed lunches.

That said, for those who believe tax dollars have paid for it, at $17T in debt, we haven't paid for anything in a llong time.

There are not enough social workers now to adequately investigate and monitor children in bad family situations.
