I do alot of online shopping. Now I am getting alot of unwanted emails from companies I never used. Should I unsubscribe or just hope they stop sending the emails? Someone told me that once you post your email to unsubscribe, that makes the situation worse since the original sender now knows there is actually someone at the email address. I really don't want to change my email address if that is an option.

I either hit SPAM or unsubscribe.

I click unsubscribe and it hasn't increased my emails.

As long as they are from legitimate sources I also use 'unsubscribe' that that works about 99% of the time.
If it's obviously spam, I never did that because all that does is legitimize your email address and they will sell it like crazy and it will get way worse. Those I always just qualify them as 'spam' and then they won't hit the inbox anymore.
I hope I don't jinx myself, but ever since I changed ISPs, almost two years ago, I have not gotten a single spam email on any of my 3 email addresses. I like that a lot!
By the time I left ATT I was getting so many of them and then when I quit ATT (that really pi$$es them off!), I suddenly started getting hundreds of them until I got my email addresses switched over. That was weird. They also started sending me spam in the snail mail when I quit them. They don't seem to like it when you quit them.
It was STILL worth quitting them!

I just unsubscribe. Sometimes it takes a few days to take effect

I just hit SPAM. And then I do not get anymore emails from them.

If it is spam, don't unsubscribe. I heard that this does validate the address to the spammers and you don't want to do that.
If it is from a legit source, like a retailer, you can unsubscribe with no worries. It does take a few days/weeks, and sometimes I have to do it a few times for it to stick. (I tend to think this is on purpose from the source, but that is just me . . . )

I would wait to see if the companies offer you any good discounts thru the emails before I unsubscribe. It might take a few days for the emails to stop when you do unsubscribe from them.
