Re: Two things I read about and learned this a.m.

I've just learned within the last week or so that I've been pronouncing Qatar incorrectly.

@JaneMarple - My friend's daughter taught there for two years a few years ago. She is a brilliant girl, who went to a well-respected college. Although she had no interest in teaching, Qatar recruited the best of the best to teach there.

She lived in an apartment that was more like a luxury hotel with others from around the world who also were there to teach. She had maid service and dinners provided if she wanted them. They treated her like royalty, and paid her very well.

Anyway, my friend told me the correct pronunciation is "Kotter," as in "Welcome back . . ."

I hear it pronounced different ways by different newscasters. I say it the way she taught me!

@frenchie   According to the essay I was reading, every second of the day the equivalent of the contents of a large truck of textiles ends up somewhere in the world's landfill.

Assuming that number is at all accurate, there'd be about 10,000 trucks of just textile trash in a year.  I've lived in or near water-endangered areas my entire life and never before had the slightest understanding of the extent of textile pollution.

Re: Two things I read about and learned this a.m.

@Sooner   In quantity that's most likely correct, but because huge quantities of the discarded textiles come from manufacturing waste more than completed garment waste, until we figure out a way to manufacture affordable clothing here in the US, I have no idea how we contribute to the solution beyond my small personal decision not to buy excess clothing.

Any ideas how we return to massive clothing manufacture across the US?  I have none - even from the years when we did manufacture more of our clothing needs and wants, it wasn't an easy industry.  Today's worldwide economic and political issues I think make it an even harder go now.

@millieshops No I am talking about the things that are attributed to causing climate change don't matter what WE do unless India and China change their ways.  Which they have no real intention of doing.

Should be thinking more about what to do to deal with it than stopping it, which USA has no say over.

Look at post #12 where @beach-mom says it's "Kotter" as in "Welcome Back Kotter."  This was from her friend's daughter who lived there for 2 years. (I've been saying "Cutter".)

I read the post but I'm referring to the news reporters pronouncing it "cutter"! @shoesnbags
