Too bad they let them go. They will come back to the states and probably be laughing about it.
During my world travels, and especially when I was in Europe, I saw an awful lot of 'ugly American' behavior and was constantly embarrassed by it. Sure, other people do stupid and bad things, too, but that doesn't make it ok. By and large, it was usually Americans who were ugly, idiotic, and disrespectful.
I also saw a lot of them who were outraged if somebody didn't speak English. Yet, I'd be willing to bet those were the same people who now get outraged if others come HERE who don't speak English. These are the people who will rant 'if you come to the US, speak our language or just don't come here'.

I hope this isn't going to turn into yet, another, "let's bash California" thread.
I believe she is from California. I didn't read that as a bash; I read it as she's ashamed to have these two idiots from her state.
And why are posters still bringing up Greece/Greeks?
oops - just saw Issie's explanation about CA.
I see that. But I'm from California, too, and don't see these two women as being representative of the nearly 40 million other people living here.
I'd be ashamed of them if they were my kids...otherwise, no.

Recently I saw a segment about the filming of the latest James Bond in Rome. The city is in such disrepair, as well as covered in littered and graffiti, that some of the movie will be generated by computer.
What these two did is criminal but I do not think we can blame Americans for all Rome's problems. I've been to Rome numerous times and have visited most major tourist attractions. I've seen (non (?) American) tour groups drop garbage anywhere and everywhere. They are every bit as rude rude as "ugly Americans".

I'm from California also, and I did not find the comment about California offensive. I don't think the Greeks hold it against California. They probably just think "stupid Americans." It's a reflection on all of us. It's just sad that particularly young people cannot respect things like the Colosseum...and other people's property (period).
Twenty-five years old is plenty old enough to know that vandalism is wrong.
I think we both said the same thing. Actually...according to USlegal.com:
"Age of reason means the age at which a person is legally capable of committing a crime or tort as s/he can distinguish right from wrong. The age of reason varies from jurisdiction to jurisdiction. Normally, seven years is usually the age below which a child is conclusively presumed not to have committed a crime or tort. And, 14 years is usually the age below which a rebuttable presumption applies."

I heard about this...really makes Americans look so bad.
