I was just sitting here enjoying watching an osprey gliding over the lake fishing, when up over the hill from the lake comes a beautiful turtle. Gorgeous lime green pattern on his black shell. He walked right up to our lanai, then around the house  toward the street. DH went out and caught him and brought him back into the back yard so he doesn't get hit by a car. That scared him so now he is staying inside his shell. Amazing how pretty he is.

I love this time of year after the snowbirds leave - we see a lot more wildlife because there are so few people here.

Most of our turtles here are about the size around of a dinner plate - this one is large - about 1 1/2 times that size. DH said he is very heavy.

I googled - they are called Florida box turtles.

@151949I saw a turtle on the side of the road on my way to work, and I pulled over to pick him up and move him so he would not get hurt, and it was too late.  I was horrified and upset.  I cried all the way to work.  It was awful.

I'm glad you had a nicer experience today.

@151949  Isn't it about time for you and DH to head North for the summer?  I always enjoy reading about your adventures there.

@151949 - actually, you should put them somewhere safe in the direction they were headed. If I seem them going across the road, I pick them up off the street and put them on the other side.

I would never pick a turtle up to move it along, don't know if it's a snapper or not.  We do get snappers in our yard so I would use a shovel to pick it up to move it or a broom to shoo it along.

Last September my husband & I were on our way to have lunch together on our anniversary.  I was driving down a very busy main road and saw a turtle step off the curb.  I did a quick glance over my shoulder and thankfully there were no cars coming.  I stopped the car, put my hazards on and my husband jumped out and picked him (or her) up and brought him to the other side of the road.  It's such a busy four-lane road I don't think he would have made it otherwise.  I think it's nice you guys helped him along!  :-)

Seems to me i have read that if you see a turtle trying to get to the other side of the road, and you want to pick him up you need to move him to the direction he is trying to get to.

When you lose some one you L~O~V~E, that Memory of them, becomes a TREASURE.
