"Haters gonna hate" is the online equivalent of a weary eye-roll at the vitriol engendered by, well, just about anything on the internet these days. It's a way of casting off negativity as just another inescapable fact of life, like losing one sock per laundry cycle, or entropy. But we've always wondered, is that empirically true? Are haters in fact going to hate? Turns out the answer's yes. A recent study asked participants their feelings on a wide number of mundane things like crossword puzzles and taxidermy. After gauging whether people liked or disliked things in general, they asked them about the "Monahan LPI-800 Compact 2/3-Cubic-Foot 700-Watt Microwave Oven" which was literally made up to sound infuriating. Sure enough, the predispositioned haters hated that microwave. "The present research demonstrated that some people tend to like things, whereas others tend to dislike things," the researchers concluded. So the next time somebody throws some shade your way, let it roll off: It's just the way they are.
