I agree with you, happy. I realize people can spend their money however they want but I still marvel at the degree to which others are mesmerized by new gadgets and taken in by Madison Ave.. It's so clear what the manufacturers are trying to do - with apps galore and "smart" tvs all geared to getting us to buy, buy, buy. I love the internet but I can wait till I'm home on my pc or I can use my laptop elsewhere if needed. It's more than enough for me to have my phone be a phone and a camera. How did we all function 30 years ago without our phone apps and selfies? {#emotions_dlg.laugh}

People have asked that throughout history, which would take us back to living in caves.

How did we function without cars, vacuum cleaners, washing machines? It's called progress, but you don't have to go there if you don't want to. There really are people living off the land and by the sweat of their brow.

Somewhere in my 50s I gained the confidence to not care what others think about how I live my life. That's a wonderful perk to getting older. There are some things I'll splurge on and others that I pay the least I possibly can.

"What do you care about what new technology somewhat else has or doesn't have? What difference does it make to you if I have SS appliances or white? If i have granite counters or formica?"

That goes both ways, HH. What do YOU care?

Your post is full of judgement about how people spend their money: "They are totally without the ability to evaluate if it is a good idea or a reasonable use of their money " and "Or people who have to chuck almost their entire wardrobe each season to buy whatever the magazines say is that year's style." -yet you do not like when you think people judge you for not spending on the things they do.

We all have our "vices", some spend on multiple residences, some on jewelry, handbags, clothing, or gadgets.

But please, judge not lest ye be judged is a very good rule to attempt to adhere to, right?

That could be said of everything. Ironic that's being said while on on an online shopping forum that didn't exist 20 yrs ago....and on a computer that was purchased within those 30 said yrs.

Well, here we go again... where's the deer eating popcorn when we need it?

Somehow, this thread doesn't surprise me; the OP never disappoints.

No, not really. I clearly stated that I love the internet. I would elaborate and say I find it invaluable. I never said "how did we function without the internet" because I still wonder about that. Just yesterday I said to DH that the amount of times I used to have to go to the library to research things was mind boggling and many times I could never find the info I needed. The internet has given me invaluable life changing info and so much more. I clearly stated "apps and selfies". Take more time when you read.

Apps are important for research and referencing too. At least for me!

PS: I don't "do" selfies. And I JUST got a smart phone because of the research and reference capabilities! And now I am one of the cool kids, lol

LOL, about the "cool kids". I know what you mean. Also, no 'selfies' for me.

I also enjoy some of the games on my smart phone.

When something new appears on the scene there are those who just MUST have it at any cost. They are totally without the ability to evaluate if it is a good idea or a reasonable use of their money - they simply HAVE TO HAVE IT because everyone else does. As a proud tightwad I am not able to understand that mindset. Example : people who pay a small fortune for certain trendy cell phones. Or people who have to chuck almost their entire wardrobe each season to buy whatever the magazines say is that year's style. (I used to have a neighbor who did that every season - and she bought most of her clothes at Saks - some of the other neighbors who wore her same size did very well with her cast offs). My DH is a little bit this way with electronics but he is also a tightwad so that keeps him reined in. I also don't get when someone gets all in a huff because someone says they don't want to buy the newest and greatest widget out there. What do you care about what new technology somewhat else has or doesn't have? What difference does it make to you if I have SS appliances or white? If i have granite counters or formica?

Ok - rant over.

Precisely. Why do YOU care what new technology someone else buys, what countertops they have or what appliances they have? What's the difference between what you're saying and what you say others are saying to you?
