Planning a land only trip in Alaska and insurance is recommended by the travel company. I know that policies can cover trip cancellations, trip interuptions and medical.
I have heard that it is nearly impossible to collect if a problem that ins company will require dr letters and other documents.
@granddi .. the last time DH and I traveled to Italy we got our travel insurance through World Nomads. Fortunately we didn't have to use it but it gave us peace of mind.

I personally would not pay for trip insurance. It has been my experience that in the event something happens, the trip is either covered or a credit given.
We were supposed to travel via Southwest and my aunt got very ill. I called Southwest, explained and they issued me a credit for the exact amount we had paid for our flight.
When we were in Florida, a hurricane was forecast and the city we were in was being evacuated. We contacted the airline and they got us on a different flight, no charge, to get us out of Florida. The condo. refunded our money for the days not used.
If you are talking about health insurance, I don't know. I've never thought about that.
I don't think trip insurance covers what some here have posted about does it?

@Lipstickdiva, the insurance we purchased for our trip to Italy was for both the trip cancellation and health coverage. I would not go without it. You never know if you will become ill or have an accident.

I had to cancel a trip and you must provide documentation to get the refund. Be advised, you don't get the price of the insurance back just the trip itself. A friend's mother fell and broke her hip, she is an only child and her mom's POA. My friends got documentation from the doctor and hospital and I got the refund. You can't just decide you no longer want to go.
