I am thinking of registering for a translation class at a university in my city.

The course will encompass "basic skills and techniques to translate texts and how to find the resources to solve translation problems". It will cover medical, news, legal, business and financial translations.

I know I have to take a placement examination before acceptance into this type of class, so my real question is: Where do you think the bar is set for this type of class?

Back in my youth, I remember when classes like this were offered with NO prerequisite for knowing anything about the language, just show up with a dictionary and hours of looking up words and idiomatic expressions.

Thanks for any opinions.
