Part of the problem is that big stores bring big costs. Heating, cooling, lighting, cleaning, and stocking a big store are all more expensive. Those costs end up getting passed on to the consumer.

I've been to Toys R Us twice this week.  Bought a few things the first time to put away for gifts, got home after the first trip and realized one was a duplicate of something I'd already bought and returned it yesterday and bought something else.

On the first visit, I told the associate we were thinking about them and hoped they'd stay in business.  It felt awkward NOT to say anything.

He's a young guy.  Said he'd been with the company for 18 years and would be devastated if they closed.  Having been through company sales and layoffs before (more than once), I felt for him and told him so.

Times his story by 33,000.
