OK -- I used to copy and paste from Flickr -- I don't think I can do that anymore -- bummer

Big enough to make my mouth water.

That picture is a little old -- four of those were in my salad last night

I just planted my tomatoes and one basil plant yesterday. I'm in VA and every other year I'd have my plants in last month but the weather this year was wacky. Up until about last week the temps at night and in the early morn were on the border for frost - in May and in Virginia no less!
When dad was alive I used to plant a large tract of tomatoes, zucchini, peppers, basil and other things and he'd tend it. He died last year so instead I have 5 plants in containers on the deck. I'm rural and when I roto-tilled the larger tract other years, I'd have to "share" the crop with the deer, groundhogs and other critters. My deck is 25 feet off the ground so some critters can't' get to them but the birds and squirrels may be another matter.

How does a person keep the birds away. I've tried to grow tomatoes and just as soon as they turn a bit red, here come the birds.
I put the tomatoes in cages and I wrapped some kind of cloth around them. But the little buggers get in there somehow.

Isn't that something Maggie? I have always had tomatoes and never had a problem with birds. We had a gopher roll away a baby watermelon but that's all. I'd call you county extension office and ask them what to do, they like to answer these kind of questions.

Bean counter, I sure could eat some fried zucchini. Till I popped!

There is nothing like a home grown tomato.
